Who it fooled: Most major media outlets from Time to Reuters to The Atlantic to the BBC (whose story has since been scrubbed online). Above all, the UN itself.
Why it's bogus: Actual residents of Mosul and regional experts quickly knew it reeked. The story was subsequently discredited by experts and jouranalists and called a hoax soon after.
2. Church-burning in Mosul July 2014
Who it fooled: Human Rights Watch, The Atlantic, The Independent, The Times of India
Why it's bogus: An intrepid archaeologist, Sam Hardy, called BS and thanks to the magic of reverse image Google search and some prodding by yours truly, it was eventually retracted by several outlets and never mentioned again.

Someday I hope we get a true accounting of all this: the enormity of the money and resources being poured into campaigns to manipulate and deceive us.

(36,988 posts)Video of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians being marched along a Libyan beach before being beheaded by black-clad members of ISIS is hard for any civilized person to watch, but experts who made it through the sickening, five-minute clip told FoxNews.com Friday they came to the same conclusion: The footage was faked.
No one holds out hope the victims, mostly poor fishermen who had gone to Libya to scratch out a living, are still alive. But several anomalies in the video, which was posted online Feb. 15, indicated to trained eyes that at least some of the production was done on "green screen" with background added later, perhaps to disguise the real location of the atrocity. A day after the clip went viral,
The shot that seems really tampered with is the one with the really tall Jihadists and the dwarf Christians.

(18,184 posts)as soon as I saw the first Isis hostage photo (of the detainee kneeling on a beach wearing an orange jumpsuit next to the guy in the ninja suit).
Apparently a lot of the imagery in the Isis videos is similar to scenes in "Valley of the Wolves" which is a TV series and movie saga aired in Turkey a few years ago.

(567 posts)ABC News published a map -- also cited by Breitbart.com -- which was "purportedly published" by ISIS and "widely shared on Twitter." According to ABC, the "terrifying" map was "published at the same time that ISIS announced the creation of a caliphate."
But ABC News didn't actually trace the image to ISIS, and instead relied on a tweet of the image from American Third Position (A3P). ABC didn't disclose that A3P is a white nationalist political party in the United States.
As iO9 pointed out, "This is one of those 'garbage in, garbage out' stories, since ABC News' source was Twitter." The outlet cited to analysis from Aaron Zelin, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, who explained, "It's an old image put out by fans of the group ... There is nothing official about it nor is there some alleged 5-year plan."
Fox News reported the same day that a "chilling new map reveals the ISIS plan for world domination," displaying an expanded, translated map the network claimed was "released by ISIS" to lay out "its five-year plan." Several days ago the Daily Mail similarly highlighted the map as a "chilling five-year plan," as did The Blaze, the website of notorious caliphate fear monger Glenn Beck.
While Fox attributed the map to ISIS, the Daily Mail described it as having been "widely shared by ISIS supporters on social networks."

(23,946 posts)dangerous?
The manipulators or the manipulated media that forwards ISIS propaganda with breathless abandon?
"ISIS's violent bona fides are not in doubt to anyone paying attention. They've targeted religious minorities, beheaded aid workers, sold women into sex slavery and have been all-around devastating for those under their rule. But as America debates the possibility of a full-scale ground invasion of ISIS-controlled territory, it's important to note that much of the ISIS threat namely that which targets the West has been habitually overstated by an uncritical media."
As Obama said, to thunderous denial by the GOP supported by the parrot media.
We are all being trolled by ISIS - and the entranced Western media trollees seem to embrace it.

(10 posts)I think ISIS as a trans-regional threat is massively exaggerated, and is a result of the need for some borders to be redrawn in that region. I say let it happen organically. Not an American problem. But, they're light years from a force for good or something of that nature.

When a perplexed Kilcullen began to investigate, he says, he discovered that the incongruous flags were linked to what he says is one of the most important, and unnoticed, weapons of guerrilla war in Afghanistan and across the world: the lightweight, virtually indestructible Toyota Hilux truck.
In Afghanistan in particular, he says, {the trucks are} incredibly well respected. So well respected, in fact, that some enterprising fraudsters thought them worthy of ripping off. The imitations, Kilcullen says, had flooded the market, leaving disappointed fighters in their wake. But then a shipment of high-quality [real] Hiluxes arrived, courtesy of the Canadian government, he explains. They had little Canadian flags on the back. Because they were the real deal, and because of how the Hilux is seen, over time, strangely, the Canadian flag has become a symbol of high quality across the country. Hence the tattoos.

(111,261 posts)Uh, folks, it doesn't work that way any more than it worked on those tourists who woke up in bathtubs full of ice with both kidneys gone in the early 90s. Organ matching takes time, too much time to keep organs viable. You can't just toss them into chilled saline in a beer cooler and keep them on the shelf until you get a customer through the door. Kidneys have a shelf life of just over 24 hours. Hearts, lungs and livers have far less.
While they might relish the idea, those organs would earn them peanuts compared to stolen petroleum and its products, too little to bother keeping prisoners alive long enough to find a tissue match, sell organs on the black market and manage to transport them to the recipient.
Besides, you can bet their surgeons are just a little busy trying to patch their fighters up enough to send back into battle.

(2,337 posts)No that we've debunked these stories, it seems that ISIS doesn't really have any fangs after all.
I mean what's left now that these lies are exposed? Burning humans to death in cages? Some mild beheadings (done very cleanly and professionally, i must add), and the wholesale killing of anyone who stands in their way? Pfff, hardly anything to care about. after all, it's just a bunch of brown people killing each other! Amirite?
