(7,720 posts)comment was not in reference to President Obama's speech. I should have made that clear. Plus, I should read the speech.

crusades
A popular pastime during Middle Ages in which participants celebrated the King of Peace by raping and slaughtering every Muslim in sight. Generally considered the beginning of the age-old Christian tradition of killing those who are different from them.

(23,946 posts)And what is wrong with a little lecture, it is the way tens of millions of college folks now graduating innAmerica in record numbers, do actual learning?

(3,585 posts)That shouldn't have been brought up at all, we have real issues and foreign policy and problems that we need attention paid to, and we don't to be discussing the Crusades.

(45,319 posts)for hundreds of years. Many posts on DU and in some ways Obama's speech seem to think the Crusades were the start of the whole tussle between but the Islamic Conquests and incursions into Europe had been going on for centuries. Yep, Crusades were brutal wars. As were the Islamic Conquests, which involved invasion and occupation of territory, looting, pillaging, mass killing, very much like that of the Crusades. Most historians see the Crusades as being partially responsive to the threat of invasion by Muslim forces which had been going on for centuries.
They sacked Rome, laid siege to Vienna, occupied Iberia...it's history folks.
