for hundreds of years. Many posts on DU and in some ways Obama's speech seem to think the Crusades were the start of the whole tussle between but the Islamic Conquests and incursions into Europe had been going on for centuries. Yep, Crusades were brutal wars. As were the Islamic Conquests, which involved invasion and occupation of territory, looting, pillaging, mass killing, very much like that of the Crusades. Most historians see the Crusades as being partially responsive to the threat of invasion by Muslim forces which had been going on for centuries.
They sacked Rome, laid siege to Vienna, occupied Iberia...it's history folks.
