Baby Killed By Dog In Henderson, Nevada On His First Birthday

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/29/baby-killed-by-dog_n_1462963.html

The Las Vegas Sun reports that the 120-pound Mastiff/Rhodesian mix had never displayed any previous signs of aggression toward people, according to the family who lives in Henderson, Nev.

The baby crawled over to the dog to pet him, the police reported. The Daily Mail writes that Chris Shahan, the baby's father, believes his son tried to grab the dog’s fur to stand up when the dog reacted.

The dog ... latched his jaws around the boy's head and began shaking him, police said. The grandmother attempted to pull the boy from the dog while other family members rushed to help, police said.

According to KLAS-TV, the dog will be observed for rabies, and will then be euthanized.

Why don't they euthanize it and then test for rabies? XemaSab Apr 2012 #2

It's not uncommon that dogs don't get that babies are people saras Apr 2012 #9
It's good to remember that any dog can do this to any person at any time. Brickbat Apr 2012 #11
In this case the size difference is enough that the dog can snap the baby's neck with a shake. FarCenter Apr 2012 #12

around most or any animals no matter how non threatening the animal is.

babies don't understand what they should/shouldn't do. and animals aren't humans that can understand whether it's just some baby playing around with them or something else.

The dog is unadoptable for legal reasons, that much is certain.

why wait to see if he gets sick, which can take weeks? The fastest definitive diagnosis of rabies is via necropsy.

on DU is supposed to be. Dogs can be dangerous and infants need to be kept away from them without full supervision.

Nor are any mollosar type dogs. You have to respect them, and their historical purposes as work dogs.

That said, it is kind of surprising a Mastiff killed a child. They usually treat them like members of the family and would rather die themselves than harm them or let harm come to them.

This is just sad all the way around.

And I don't mean to make their beauty less.

My precious dog was a 105 lbs Doberman. We went to obedience school together, went rollerblading together, he was a hero of a dog when another dog tried to attack us on a run. He defended our property, and was pretty much the most awesome thing you could expect out of a dog.

I wish all dogs were like that, trained like that, and loved like that.

Loving dogs but very territorial and extremely strong. And could bite through a tin can. As I understand it (not being much of a dog person), that strong bite is a hallmark of Rhodesians. They adored my son but I would never have had them around a toddler.

Large dogs kill small animals by biting and shaking to break their neck or back.
