I think you might be surprised to know that the Ferguson protest effort is similarly organized and outlined. (maybe not as leader-oriented)

...I would agree there was antipathy among some of movement leadership toward his sexual orientation. I do know, however, that his outreach to labor was during a time when unions were very segregated and racism was very prevalent among members. Still, Rustin's repeated and extensive efforts to forge alliances with labor were courageous and forward-thinking; even if he did find resistance from union rank and file, as well as from his own supposed allies in the movement.

(17,200 posts)... but their roles have been largely forgotten. I'm a big fan of both men, they were fighting for worker's rights and civil rights while MLK was still in short pants.

Thanks bigtree. Bayard Rustin won the prize for "best organizer." At a time when there was no internet/no social media/no cell phones. Nothing was left to chance.
