Tell Craigslist Pets Aren't Products!

Most would agree that sites like Craiglist are affordable and easy to use. But it's also understood that there's a certain amount of risk involved whenever you sell or purchase on the site. Nowhere is this fact more worrisome than in the "free," "wanted," and "farm and garden" categories, where animals are bought and sold. A loophole in the Craigslist terms of use means the only requirement one must meet in order to deal in animals is to list a rehoming fee.

Craigslist must absolutely and without exception ban any and all buying, selling, and giving away of animals on their site. Not tomorrow or the next day. But now.

2. Craigslist is a good place to find chickens, what's wrong with that?

I've gotten replacement roos there, and added to my flock several times. All my experiences were good ones. Someone had too many chickens, and I needed a few more.

People cared enough about them to try to find them good homes. I'm sure there are abuses, but I don't see this as a solution.

People can, and often do, flag posts for removal if posters are actually selling pets.

In my neck of the woods, Craigslist has been extremely valuable in finding homes for the pets that are often abandoned on or near our property. We spay or neuter, and then carefully screen those who respond to our ads. Without this forum, those dogs and cats would end up in our municipal, high kill shelter. The only no kill shelter here has an extensive waiting list.....

A quick search brought up several stories like this. But I do see there are two sides now.

EL PASO, Texas-- El Paso animal advocates said a man selling puppies far too young put them in jeopardy of dying.

The Humane Society of El Paso is now caring for two puppies sold on Craigslist.

The seller was caught in the act by El Paso Animal Control officers and given five citations, three for selling puppies under 8 weeks old and two for roadside sales.

The city is not able to release the name of the seller who received the citations.
