Prominent Republican to Condemn Georgia’s Discriminatory “Religious Liberty” Bills
Former Georgia Attorney General Michael Bowers, a Republican perhaps best known for defending the states anti-sodomy law in the late 80s and early 90s, will reportedly condemn on Tuesday two discriminatory state bills, HB 218 and SB 129.
Currently, HRC is on the ground with local partners and leaders, including Georgia Equality and the Georgia Unites Against Discrimination" coalition, to defeat efforts to pass these bills, which would undermine local LGBT non-discrimination protections.
According to Atlanta Journal Council, Bowers paper includes the following analysis of the two bills:
First, I believe if enacted into law this legislation will be an excuse to practice invidious discrimination.
Second, if enacted, the proposed (measures) will permit everyone to become a law unto themselves in terms of deciding what laws they will or will not obey, based on whatever religious tenets they may profess or create at any given time. The potential intended and unintended consequences are alarming.
