Everyone reaches a time when they are unable to work for some reason or are not allowed to work because no one will hire them. And everyone will be retired from working at all by circumstances if they live long enough. And in some cases such a situation will occur at a very young age.
So what are these people supposed to do with no source of income now that the GOP is trying to end all sources of retirement income unless you save 2 or 3 million dollars. Virtually no worker is able to save that much.

I'm guessing that's the plan.

(39,215 posts)used to not have it in the good old days are forgetting that the world has changed.
Then 2% of the population lived in cities. Today 98% live in cities. Then the elderly went to live with their family members and worked on the farm as long as they could. They had gardens and chickens and raised other animals for their own use. They share a vehicle. The did not have the kind of entertainment we do today.
Today the younger members of our families often are having trouble surviving themselves. They cannot afford to take care of grandma and grandpa. Most do not have room for a garden and animals and they live a long way from their jobs. And today the cost of living is extremely high.
So you are correct saving Social Security and all the other retirement income programs is very important not just for the elderly but for the young.
Let's face it - there is no other way.

(10,602 posts)I saw a movie that featured an Indian tribe years ago. One scene was about an old Indian woman who could not help the tribe. And what happened was shocking. She volunteered to go outside the teepee in the dead of winter. She volunteered to freeze to death. I am not sure how true the story was about the custom of that tribe or if it was just the movie plot that drove the scene.
So I guess that is what the GOP has in mind. Ending Social Security and Medicare will end up with people dying in the street. I could not really be civil to GOPPER legislators any more. They are just plain evil and sadistic now.

(39,215 posts)grandfather committed suicide rather than being shipped from one family to another. It is not easy to feel like a burden.
And I agree. The gop is evil to the bone today.

(3,732 posts)expect to see paid propagadists astroturf forums and article comments with the assertion that old folks are LYING about the willingness of their kids to take them in, and they just want to live high off the hog at the "taxpayer's" expense, and they are probly taking a lot of luxury vacations, smoking, drinking, and abusing medical marijuana with their Social Security money. Since mom and pop are probably already suffering from dementia, living with their children would be safer and more prudent as well as shifting the economic burden off the abstract "taxpayer".
This astroturf tsunami is coming so soon, we might as well start the countdown now. 10
