Where is Joseph Welch when we need him?
Welch, students of Wisconsin political history will remember, was the Army's general counsel during the storied Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954, when our soon-to-be-disgraced U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy was at the height of his infamous witch hunt into supposed Communist infiltration of American institutions and especially the government.
During the course of the nationally televised hearings, McCarthy suddenly began accusing a young lawyer in Welch's firm of having Communist leanings himself. While in law school, the attorney, Fred Fisher, associated with the National Lawyers Guild, which McCarthy claimed was yet another Communist front.
Welch was incensed at McCarthy's recklessness and accused the Wisconsin senator of trying to destroy this young man's reputation for no apparent reason.
