Nearly 50 years ago, a girl from India captivated Nebraska as Omaha surgeons battled for her future

Aruna Shrivastava walks the corridor with a nurse at what was then University Hospital in August 1968. She was brought to the country by her father, who was studying the poultry industry in Schuyler, Nebraska. He wanted her heart surgery to be done in the U.S. rather than their native India.

After performing lifesaving heart surgery in 1968, Omaha surgeons predicted that a little girl from India would go on to have a normal life.
And for nearly 50 years, Aruna Shrivastava did. She finished school and got a teaching job. She got married and had children. She traveled, hiked, climbed and swam. She loved and was loved.
When death came, it was sudden and occurred halfway around the world.
Some Nebraskans may remember her still.
