And to say that this is going to pierce through the armor of cops is ridiculous because its a tiny bullet like this big, she added, demonstrating the size with her fingers. And to say that the cops Kevlar isnt tough enough to handle that ammunition is ridiculous. And like the FBI said, no one has used this in a handgun to shoot a cop.

(49,445 posts)The armor on patrol officers is designed to stop handgun bullets, which tend to be wider, shorter, heavier, and slower than rifle bullets.
The "tiny" bullet used in rifles that shoot .223 Remington ammo has nearly three times the energy of a .357 Magnum focused into a much smaller area.
And the .223 is on the low end of the rifle cartridge power spectrum.
I doubt that patrol body armor would stop an expanding bullet, much less a non-expanding bullet like regular full-metal-jacket or the "armor piercing" M855 bullet.
If you want to stop rifle bullets you need what the army uses.

(16,974 posts)They are small rounds and any rifle round will pierce most bullet resistant vests, armor piercing or not. The rounds in question do not meet the ATF regulations as armor piercing as most of the actual bullet is lead. A regular 55 grain full metal jacket is just as if not more dangerous as they are more accurate and cheaper. Any round can be dangerous, pistol or rifle.
The ones in question are 5.56X45

(16,974 posts)it is the one on the left. The top half of the grey is steel, the bottom half is lead. It is all covered in a copper jacket. The one on the right is the new A1 round that is replacing the M855 round. It is the so-called green round as the lead is gone and has been replaced by copper. Both of these rounds do not meet the definition of armor piercing by ATF regulations.
