In 2012 an Indian student was violently raped on a moving bus in Delhi and died of horrific internal injuries. Leslee Udwin spoke to one of the rapists on death row while spending two years making a film about the case. She came away shocked by India's treatment of women - but inspired by those seeking change.
The horrifying details of the rape had led me to expect deranged monsters. Psychopaths. The truth was far more chilling. These were ordinary, apparently normal and certainly unremarkable men.
On 16 December 2012, the 23-year-old woman had been to see a film, the Life of Pi, with a male friend. At 8.30pm they boarded an off-duty bus, with six men on board, five adults and a juvenile. The men beat the friend and each raped the woman in turn, before assaulting her viciously with an iron instrument.

I don't much post OPs or links to news articles (so forgive me if format is incorrect) but this article about an upcoming film about various rapes in India is so heartbreaking and shocking. It's horrifying that whole segments of a society dismiss other human beings in such a way. It's a feminist and a humanist issue, and I am actually shocked at reading this.
It's a film I want to see, and I think it's important that we all read this, as disturbing as it is. It's not only happening in India.

(10,745 posts)Are those who are able to conceal their true sociopathic selves with a veneer of normality. And unfortunately, it is quite true that some sectors of Indian society all too often willing to dismiss rapists as perfectly average and upstanding citizens, even though they're hardly either(but then again, American society isn't immune from this, either, I'm afraid.)!
I applaud Leslie Udwin's attempts to help bring about change, not just for India, but the world at large.

(3,732 posts)While some over-privileged guys may be tired of being hassled over "Feminism", feeling oh so self-righteously Neutral Point of View in declaring themselves to be "Humanists", the fact is that women still have special problems that need to be addressed. This is especially true when you consider the position and progress of women on a global scale.
As long as women must deal with global sex slave trafficking, honor killings, consequence-free rape - then there should be an interest in Feminism to promote study, drive policy, and provide a vision of progress.
The attitude of the Delhi rapist should be argument enough.

But as you said this isn't just a problem in India. This ass just takes the idea that women owe men sex to a terrible extreme, but it's really just a continuum that date rapists use.

The good news out of this, I think, is that his despicable attitude, and casual willingness to voice it even in the face of his death sentence, will bring this issue out into the open for discussion and to be addressed head on.
Amazing that in the face of his death sentence, he hasn't learned a thing.
