(16,230 posts)I'm not actually in Philly, but I'm right outside in Norristown, and there are lots of great little mom and pop pizza parlors around here. Via Veneto's makes what may be the best sicillian in the world.
The chains have to continually come up with gimmicks in order to maintain sales, things like stuffed crust or bacon wrapped, while the local parlors have thrived on the same menus for decades. That says a lot.

(72,790 posts)We used to go a lot during high school/college late night.
We had this waitress, Sandra, and she was always like "I can't wait to get off my shift and have my funny cigarette". She would show us her cigarette pack and, YUP, a joint was inside! She was real cool.

I suggested those places in New Haven because I feel it's similar to Santarpio's.
There's a decent place in Waterbury, south of Torrington, called Mario's.

(2,419 posts)than any other large franchise business. They rely on favorable tax policies and other provisions to run their pyramid schemes. These happen to be based on the sale of formulaic pizza like substances. They love the republicans because they help create the conditions where these cash cows thrive-and the republican party gets its share of the milk. For the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone who lives in NJ or NY or any other large metropolitan area would ever eat this crap. I live in a rural area of NJ and there are at least 20 independent Pizza shops within a 15 minute drive-all far superior to any of these chains. The only thing more disgusting than the food is the guys like "Pappa John" who just rake in the cash from the franchisees.

(5,364 posts)My father, like me, has discriminating taste in food. Like me, he always turned his nose up at chain food, preferring local "mom & pop" choices unless there is no other alternative.
Unlike me, he is a hard-core conservative and self labeled tea party republican. He always was conservative but he went HARD right after 2008. Now he's always singing the praises of what I'll call "Big Food". He now convinces himself that he likes chain pizza, or restaurants better now. If he gets to a position to where he admits local food is better, he's always quick to defend chains because they are such big money makers.
First time I've ever seen someone change their personal tastes based on politics.
Bizarre. Or at least I think so.

(14,449 posts)I go where I want and buy what I want. I just can't keep up with the myriad of plases I am not supposed to go and there are tons. You can drive yourself crazy especially if you factor in individual products too. Nope if I feel like PaPa Johns I get it especially since they are the only place that delivers in my area. I don't have a problem with others trying to keep up with all the boycotts but I won't do it. Just being honest.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)I have a local pizza place that I prefer, but they don't deliver. If I'm going out for pizza or feel like picking up, I go there. If I don't feel like leaving the house, I order Pizza Hut.

(41,861 posts)San Francisco has a lot of small businesses that make pizza. Its more than likely they are not donating money to a political party but trying to use it to expand their businesses. I support the local merchants, including all the Asian food Restaurants in the area. They keep the community going and have some tasty treats for all of us, at reasonable prices.
Erich Bloodaxe BSN
(14,733 posts)Always before, I've stopped utilizing the businesses for other reasons before the boycott came around.
We've still been eating Pizza Hutt every once in a while, though, so I can finally cut the cord and get the bonus of having a politics-related reason for doing so.

(10,893 posts)when I'm back home and my family gets Caesar's. My family likes to go there because it's cheap, and we can't afford to go to the smaller chains. I prefer Papa Murphy's, Domino's, and Round Table over Caesar's, but Caesar's tastes alright.
When I'm in Humboldt, I either get Red Baron (frozen) or Westside Pizza. I'm too much of a pizza fanatic to boycott it altogether. As far as how the article talks about the unhealthiness of pizza, it's not a problem for me because I work out every day and I don't eat it every day or week. I don't like calorie counting.

There are of course exceptions to the rule, but big business is going to flock to Republicans, whether it's pizza, hardware or toilet paper they're selling.

Politicians are mostly whores who will sell themselves for pennies per taxpayer dollar.
I wonder if the influence Papa John's and Domino's receives is worth the lifetime of financial loss they get?
===
Not only do I not buy from them, but virtually my whole extended family is dissuaded from purchasing now.
===
Our one household of 5 used to spend $50-60 a week, between these two, on pizza, wings, soda, etc.
Now, they get NOTHING! And, we're healthier for it!
===
The $2,800 we annually spend sure eats into their combined $160K donation levels.
And this is just ONE household!
