There are all types of statistics that could lead one to believe that liberals are smarter than conservatives. These include the fact that Blue States have higher graduation rates than Red States and the fact that most people who seek higher education have liberal ideologies.
But in reality, these numbers provide circumstantial proof at best. We need something more. Something that fully delves into the minds of conservatives and liberals to see just whats going on. Though the right-wingers out there might not want you to know it, studies that do just that already exist.
Conservatism, Racism and Low IQ
Bright Minds and Dark Attitudes is a study performed by researchers at Brock University, and it caused quite the commotion when its results were released. The researchers found that having lower general intelligence in childhood could predict conservative and racist ideas as an adult. Thats right: having a low IQ score makes you more likely to vote conservative
and be a racist.
Now this isnt to say that all Republicans are stupid. On the contrary: I fully believe that rich Republicans are some of the smartest people in the world. They literally trick poor Republicans into thinking its the big bad governments fault that theyre poor, and in doing so, they make these people vote against their own best interests.

(18,638 posts)The dimwitted simply go where the info is the simplest to understand, which tends to be right wing propaganda.
They then blindly appropriate whatever views they are instructed to by the propagandists.
The intelligent rich are simply following their own selfish desires.
For many, the reason they are rich is because they put self interest above everything else so they join the party that sees this as the highest moral calling that a person can have.

(29,322 posts)However, given that the rhetoric or the debate (channeling John Stewart) portrayed the cable news media is left vs right that a lot of what is said isn't viewed on its own merits but rather whose saying it. Politicians for the most part aren't intellectually honest themselves which isn't helpful so if one party says global warming is BS while the other says there is some truth behind it... I think cognitive dissonance is a good description for a lot of other things as well.
Regarding The Daily Show, it would be Greek to someone who didn't follow the news or at-least had a good understanding of the players. The show also does inform you in a way which is better since it selects topics to focus on and John Oliver does a terrific job of selecting the right ones that are important and should probably receive more attention & why (Infrastructure last week, elected judges the week before). However, most people that follow politics that I talk to (predominantly Republican) are much less informed of many things & it is basically a secondary interest to most people (though I think a lot are apolitical & disillusioned with the system so don't participate but remarkably seem to default to Republicans for some reason).
I watch Bill Maher, I've been following politics pretty closely with my own local discussions but I really believe most people would be liberal, ideologically wise if they were well informed of all the facts. Precisely, because the GOP -- the predominantly big business party are effectively harming them but somehow led to believe it is the Democrats (anti-tax rhetoric is very appealing) at fault and while I certainly agree there are policies enacted by Democratic party members that are bad, anyone that is honest with noble intentions that is also well informed can't seriously believe the Republicans are better or supporting the Republicans is a better opportunity for improving the overall quality of life. They want tax cuts--since the Roaring 20's, slashing safety nets, union-busting, but you can't tell me the casual Republican or the diehard partisan conservative actually wants these things.

(45,851 posts)I know conservatives who are freaking brilliant at what they do, indeed I'm related to a few like that. One in particular I'm thinking of is rather like Ben Carson, a emergency trauma care specialist who is the person I would most want to see if I was seriously injured and actually a very funny person, great at one liners and so on. In their case it's more about being a devout member of a conservative church from birth.
