Florida DEP Not Allowed to Say "Climate Change."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=&w=1484

According to a Sunday report from the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting, Scott’s aversion to discussions of man-made climate change have been brought to bear on a department charged with protecting a state that already exhibits many of the changes scientists predict will overtake other coastal regions. Officials with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), reported writer Tristram Korten, have been restricted from using the term “climate change” or “global warming” in official correspondence.

The investigative reporting outfit called it an “unwritten policy,” which was “distributed verbally statewide” and has “affected” how one of the largest departments in the state, armed with $1.4 billion budget and 3,200 employees, does business. “The irony is clearly apparent,” Korten told The Washington Post on Sunday night. “Florida is a peninsula with 1,200 miles of coastline and when it comes to climate change, we’re the canary in the coalmine. And we’re relying on the state government to protect us and to plan for these changes.”

The report, published in the Miami Herald, was bolstered by the testimony of numerous former employees and e-mails from around the state. Kristina Trotta, who used to work in the DEP’s Miami office, said she was told during a 2014 meeting that she couldn’t employ terms like “climate change” and “global warming.” “We were told that we were not allowed to discuss anything that was not a true fact,” she said. “… The regional administrator told us that we are the governor’s agency this is the message from the governor’s office. And that is the message we will portray.”

Because freedom. Freedom from having to hear people say things that are true that might cost important people money.

In some southern parts of the state, like Miami Beach, sea rise is no longer something to debate, but something to deal with daily. The city, expected to spend $400 million to combat rising tides in the next five years, already has invested in a new drainage system officials hope will keep the streets dry for the next three decades.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, a GOP star and possible 2016 presidential contender, does not believe human activity is causing climate change, he said Sunday.

“I do not believe that human activity is causing these dramatic changes to our climate the way these scientists are portraying it,” Rubio said on ABC's "This Week."

"I do not believe that the laws that they propose we pass will do anything about it, except it will destroy our economy,” he added.

Seeing the way he trips over all the silly stuff he's required to "believe" -- the non-existence of man-made climate change being a perfect example, I don't think we have to worry about the rise of President Rubio anytime in the foreseeable future.

cognitive dissonance.

Soon they'll want taxpayer dollars to protect all that expensive waterfront property.

But they'll still deny the root cause, because we're not permitted to acknowledge we need to cut emissions.

It's that simple. And that stupid.

Sad to see a state going backwards and not make any progress.

Rick Scott presided over the company that was hit with the largest Medicare fraud fine in U.S. history.

So far, as Governor of Florida, he has

- Turned away several kajillion dollars in federal funds for high-speed rail in Florida (because reasons).

- Instituted a program requiring aid recipients to be drug tested (they passed).

- Slashed education funding, then put a little back and patted himself repeatedly on the back for it.

- Had staffers use private e-mail to solicit donations for a museum (oops that's fine just fine nevermind)

- Fired the longstanding head of the state's law enforcement agency for failing to gin up a fake criminal investigation of a political enemy of Scott's

- Had a bunch of cowboy boots emblazoned with the state seal. Because he's such a badass.

As Chris Hayes said, there really is not a less appealing personality in politics in America.

And he's all ours.

And we (our states) seem to have a running competition to see which one can fuck over the working class the most. I think Florida might be winning at the moment. But our illustrious new leader (Abbott) hasn't had time yet to start fucking up society at large.

Give him a few months and it should be a close race.

Lots of interesting characters crossover between the two states in modern history. Sometimes I wonder which one has the bigger CIA branch.

our aquifer is incredibly fragile, and already on its last legs (dying springs, the whole nine yards) and now we've got Rick Scott illegally fracking all over the state. it's like whack-a-mole. and it's a losing battle.
