Progressive radio host Bill Press argued on Tuesday that Senate Republicans “should have thought about” the penalty for treason before they attempted to undermine President Barack Obama’s negotiations with Iran.

After 47 Republican senators sent a letter to Iranian leaders telling them that any nuclear deal that the Obama administration agreed to would be undone by a future president, The New York Daily News branded the lawmakers “traitors” on its Tuesday cover.

2. Here's the Logan Act:
Tue Mar 10, 2015, 06:59 PM
Mar 2015

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

There is no doubt whatsoever that they violated this act, passed by no less than President John Adams, and named after Dr George Logan who took it up on himself to negotiate with France during the Quasi-War.

Funny, isn't the GOP the party that thinks the Founding Fathers made no mistakes?

Really, on what do you base that statement? It takes quite some gumption to make such an unqualified declaration about a law that has been the subject of one indictment and no convictions in over 215 years, a law that many legal scholars (progressive legal scholars I might add) have concluded is unconstitutional, a law that the State Department, whose views on the matter should and would be given great weight, has regarded for 40 years as not applying to situations like this.

I'm curious whether you also think that the Logan Act was, "no doubt whatsoever" violated by the ten Democrats who signed the "Dear Comandante" letter to Daniel Ortega in 1984. Just to be clear, I don't think it was even though it sought to undermine the (wrongheaded) Reagan policy of supporting the contras. Of course, Newt Gingrich and company thought it was. But even they backed down from bringing charges, largely in light of the State Department's position.

But what about DEMANDING RESIGNATIONS?

A sustained and growing demand. on their Facebook pages and social media, via other means, might actually accomplish something...

or how they're so ignorant of the history of how sedition laws have been used in this country.

Good God this has been shameful.

just make sure the public remembers what they did- make them own it. This is not treason, but it may definitely make some people think again before voting for these clowns. Ok, maybe I am being too optimistic

But it will be giggle-worthy to see the huffing and puffing from conservawhackos on the receiving end of a radio host's bombast for a change.
