GOP dissenters: Iran letter could backfire

Not every Senate Republican signed on to Sen. Tom Cotton’s extraordinary letter to Iran’s leaders, and several of those who didn’t are fuming about the freshman senator’s Monday-morning foray into nuclear diplomacy.

“I knew it was going to be only Republicans on [the letter]. I just don’t view that as where I need to be today,” Corker said in an interview. “My goal is to get 67 or more people on something that will affect the outcome.”

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) expressed doubt about her colleagues’ tactic of skirting the White House and trying to affect foreign policy by going directly to Tehran.

“It’s more appropriate for members of the Senate to give advice to the president, to Secretary Kerry and to the negotiators,” Collins said. “I don’t think that the ayatollah is going to be particularly convinced by a letter from members of the Senate, even one signed by a number of my distinguished and high ranking colleagues.”

to poison the talks, and their foreign minister has said so.

BTW since when do 47 people get to speak for congress? last time I checked congress has 535 people, and these 47 took it upon themselves to tell Iran how their agreement will be handled.

But the popular media seems absolutely bumfuzzled by it all: How can anyone not take this letter 100% seriously? It's signed by Senators and everything!

but seriously, I've heard her refer to her dumbass colleagues that way in radio interviews and really couldn't be certain whether she was sincere or being really ironic.

I'm a master of deadpan myself, and when she refers to them that way, my irony meter starts beeping hard.

the more you heap on the platitudes, the more you are being sarcastic... It's part of the decorum of the legislative branch, you should be polite and respectful in your language, but that's it.

I get the sense she was being sarcastic because she is probably unhappy about their childish tantrums that result in this kind of behavior... like a stupid college-boy prank that gets completely out of control and causes great damage to an entire community.
