Seven Marines and four soldiers are missing Wednesday after an Army helicopter crashed during a training exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle.
Eglin spokesman Andy Bourland said the Marines are part of a Camp Lejeune-based special operations group and the soldiers are from a Hammond, Louisiana-based National Guard unit. The names of those involved have not been released.
The helicopter was reported missing around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and search and rescue crews found debris from the crash around 2 a.m. Wednesday, Bourland said.
Search and rescue efforts are still underway at the site of the crash a remote swath of beach between Pensacola and Destin. The beach is owned by the military and is used for test missions.

(7,107 posts)Dense fog this morning may have had something to do with the accident.
This is not a huge population area here, so it will hit the community hard.

(1,587 posts)I was stationed near there at Hurlburt Field. It was my first assignment and it was beautiful there. Walk out the front gate, across the highway, and hit the beach.
I feel so sorry for the families of the soldiers and Marines.

(53,339 posts)It brings back for me a time in high school when we learned our former student body president was killed in a jet crash during his pilot training for Vietnam. He was someone I knew, an incredibly smart and talented guy, so I had a personal appreciation of what we lost, more than a news report on list of anonymous casualties.
