http://www.addictinginfo.org/2015/03/10/sen-tom-cotton-demands-iran-immediately-disarm-nuclear-weapons-which-they-dont-have-video/While appearing on MSNBCs Morning Joe, Sen. Tom Cotton (R) defended what many are calling a potentially illegal, possibly treasonous, definitely factually wrong letter meant for the leaders of Iran that had urged the foreign government to ignore any dealings with President Obama and suggested that Congress would kill any treaty they might agree upon sight unseen. Pressed to offer any kind of alternative short of war that would please Cotton and his ilk, the senator said that anything less than total disarmament of Irans nuclear program, including the dismantling of Irans nuclear weapons would be unacceptable....
Cotton must have been getting his information from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (he says as much in the interview) and not, say, U.S. intelligence or even common sense, because almost no one outside of Netanyahus own head believes Iran is anywhere near completing an actual nuclear weapon. But then again, Netanyahu has been predicting Iran is on the verge of getting a nuclear weapon for two decades. It may indeed be an ambition of the Iranian government to one day manufacture its own nuclear warheads, but there is no evidence to suggest that day is today.
Making Cottons proposal even more absurd is his reliance on the kind of hardline approach Republicans have enacted as U.S. policy for years and Irans nuclear program (as measured in number of centrifuges) has only swelled. Its clear that giving Iran the cold shoulder has not only not worked, but actually made things worse. Negotiating may require a bit of pride swallowing, but it cannot be less effective than the standing policy of isolation and sanctions because that policy has been an absolute trainwreck.

Then, partly because nobody does anything, 47 senators commit either treason, violate the logan act, or close, and still nothing will be done.
If we all die in a nuclear war we will all deserve it if we do nothing.

(19,567 posts)But on further reflection it think it was deliberate. If they say Iran already has nukes, then a lot of their followers will simply believe it as fact. It changes the reality for their true believers.
This one needs to be watched very closely, he's sneaky and slimy, even for a Republican. He's a warmonger and deeply involved in MIC; he's dangerous.

(45,984 posts)You don't need to have nukes if we say you have nukes or if we say you just want nukes.
By the way, Senator, the war against Iraq was an attempt at colonial piracy, not a just and noble cause. Unfortunately, if western oil companies get to develop Iraq's oil industry, as if Iraq needs any help developing its oil industry, then it's a sad case of mission accomplished.

(1,074 posts)This is a perfect example of how our media fails us miserably! I didn't see the interview, but when Cotton made the statement about Iran having to dismantle its nuclear weapons, did Scarborough follow up by saying "Iran does not have any nuclear weapons?!"
