WASHINGTON — Critics say the open letter from Senate Republicans to Iranian leaders violates the law and is an unprecedented attempt to undercut the president’s authority as commander-in-chief.

Some even suggest that it’s tantamount to treason.

But senators from Nebraska and Iowa who signed the letter characterize it as a basic civics lesson.

“I consider it a letter of education about how our constitutional system works,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. “I think it’s a good thing to educate the Iranian people about the difference between an ‘agreement’ and a treaty under the Constitution.”
