Minnesota Legislature wants to nick servers for processing of tips

Last edited Thu Mar 12, 2015, 09:05 AM - Edit history (1)

The Minnesota Legislature is trying to push through a bill that nicks the server or bartender for the credit card processing fees out of their tips.

Seriously. They don't make busboys pay for the dish soap, they don't make cooks pay for the pots and pans, but they're making your servers eat the cost of receiving their tips via a credit card.

I've done the following for years, and suggest you do the same: even when you pay your check on a credit card, leave your tip on the table in cash.

Just sayin'.

A clarification on edit: The state currently allows restaurant owners to do this. The bill is an attempt to stop this from happening.

I make it a point to put the tip in the server's hand, not leave it on the table. WillowTree Mar 2015 #9

At least in Chicago. So I either pay the tip in cash, or if I have no cash on me, I increase the tip.

It's a despicable practice.

Unless the owners allow the servers to be a part off rate negation with the merchant bank card, this is wholly unfair.

Reason I'm asking, the flag was flying over the Walmart store featured in the Walmart horse thread, and I couldn't identify the flag.
Thanks for the info!

I want to make sure that it's received by the person I intended.
