Powdered alcohol ‘Palcohol’ can be sold in U.S.: federal agency

A powdered alcohol intended to be mixed up into drinks has gained approval from a federal regulator.

The product, called Palcohol, had received the greenlight from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau briefly last year before the bureau backtracked and said the label approvals had been given in error.

On Wednesday, bureau spokesman Tom Hogue told The Associated Press the issues were resolved and that four varieties of Palcohol were approved. But Hogue noted that states can also regulate alcohol sales in their borders.

<snip>

Concerns have included abuse by minors, the potential to snort the powder and whether Palcohol's light weight would make it easy to sneak alcohol into public events or spike drinks.

Palcohol would come in a pouch, with water being added to the powder inside for the equivalent of an alcoholic drink.

so the feds legalize this shit, but still classify marijuana as a schedule I drug? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense from a public health pov.

Unless this is sugar soaked in alcohol to it's not possible to powerize alcohol.

Ethanol is a liquid all the way down to about -70 F (perhaps lower as it's been years since i played with alcohol and dry ice in the lab), at which point it becomes alcohol slush, then ice.

This has to be some sort of adsorbtion thing and i'd be really worried about the safety of the adsorbant. Unless it's just sugar and then the stuff would be good for making mai tais, slings or magaritas.

which has almost twice the alcohol content of Palcohol (190 to 50 proof). Weight savings would be gained if you decanted it from the glass bottle to a lightweight sports container.

Oh, don't forget to mark your lightweight container Caution!! Extremely Flammable- handle with care:

Although I did notice they now sell a wussy 151 proof version. Back in my college daze, one would be severely reprimanded if they made a run to Nevada without bringing back a bottle or two.

Purple Jesus contributed to my alma mater, Chico State, being ranked as the number one party school in the nation by Playboy in the seventies.

Us old farts rediscovered Everclear when we started making fine Limoncello. It's also a key ingredient in making a killer Kahlua knockoff.

for anything as the list of things more dangerous than weed is practically infinite.

It is the number of things less harmful than pot that is tiny. Does water even meet muster there? I dunno.

You can get distilled alcohol at very high purity. Having the alcohol encapsulated in a large organic molecule doesn't seem a very good way to get a high concentration of alcohol. Or to say it another way... it is way easier to poison yourself with alcohol already by simply drinking high proof alcohol.

Selling boxes of grape concentrate was permitted, so grape growers produced those -- with a helpful warning on the label not to add water and store in a dark place!

given that the restrooms of my local football stadium are ankle deep in hip pocket bottles after a football game, I don't think thats much of a problem.
