(9,148 posts)I'd like to tell Mz Dugger that.

(5,106 posts)Understanding that the "choice" was not a deliberate, "perverse" decision, but a decision to go with natural gender inclinations and feelings. I've only known one transsexual person that I'm sure of, male to female. I consider her very brave.

(5,106 posts)I assume it's only in the transitional stage that there should be any restroom trauma.

how, exactly, are they going to enforce this? who is going to pay the enforcers? who is going to pay the hospital bills of the person who lays a hand on me?
too bad family restrooms are not available everywhere. When my friend and sister du'er betty was still alive, her question was, "into which bathroom do I take my disabled husband, since he can't use the toilet by himself?"

(26,355 posts)It's amazing how many transphobes have the nerve to show their faces here, telling us, for example, that transgenderism is a "fad"...

(34,076 posts)What does the hidden post you linked to have to do with the post you responded to?

(34,076 posts)But it still doesn't explain what the hidden post linked to has to do with the conversation. Msanthrope didn't link to a person with a history of transphobic posts. She linked to a specific hidden post that - as near as I can tell - isn't transphobic and has nothing to do with the conversation.

(802 posts)"libtard" on other sites. There are quite a number of right wingers skulking around "enemy" sites such as DU. Especially near election time.

(5,106 posts)All my adult life (scary, but I'm a "child of the sixties" I've used the mens' room if I were desperate, calling into the male restroom before entering and only going in if it was empty, while there were lines for the women's room, usually at sporting events. Urinals, yes, but always a private booth, if not more. I have freaked a lot of men out while leaving, though. Now, I don't mean that I have done this on a regular basis, just in a few desperate situations

(12,958 posts)...for trans folks. It has no urinals, just two stalls, and the door locks from the inside.

(5,354 posts)If one is presenting as the gender indicated on the bathroom sign, nobody is going to know. It's not a physicians' examination room. The guy in the photo can use a mens room - and nobody's going to raise an eyebrow.
Except the occasional pervy bathroom "peeper". Maybe the bathroom laws are to protect peepers' rights?

(3,682 posts)This trans man looks a lot like a man. He has likely been blessed with a combination of genetics, income, and effective treatment to make it easy for the outer world to accept his inner sense of who he is--something he seems to want. Many transpeople are not so indistinguishable from cispeople, whether through choice or through lack of resources.
For that matter, there are cispeople whose appearances don't necessarily conform 100% to gender expectations. What happens when someone challenges their right to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender? Who is conducting the OBGYN/(whatever the equivalent for men) to verify that everyone entering a bathroom has the appropriate arrangement of X & Y chromosomes?
Outward appearance does not necessarily correspond to gender identity, nor should it. Just let people pee.
gollygee
(22,336 posts)I also wonder what they expect intersex people to do. It's so stupid. People know where they best fit. Let people pee where they need to pee.
backscatter712
(26,355 posts)There are lots of people who are cisgender, but don't quite fit into the heteronormative ideas for what a guy or a girl "should" look like. They get harassed too.
antigone382
(3,682 posts)Maybe figure out a way to make the spaces themselves safer, rather than scapegoating non-cis folks. Some men do assault other men, and some women assault other women. And LOTS of "people" assault trans folks. Legally targeting an already marginalized group ain't gonna help that.

it's easy if you're living as a man you use the men's room, if you're living as a woman you use the woman's room - see easy peasy

(2,088 posts)Part of the opposition to transwomen using the women's facilities is rooted in the "Schroedinger's rapist" narrative ("women need to consider the possibility of any person with a penis being a rapist" that is being peddled not by right-wingers but by some Feminists.
