(27,247 posts)There is a big difference between having fluoride in toothpaste and spitting it out, and constantly running that stuff through your body.
A Harvard study links fluoride to problems with neurological development in children.
"The average loss in IQ was reported as a standardized weighted mean difference of 0.45, which would be approximately equivalent to seven IQ points for commonly used IQ scores with a standard deviation of 15.* Some studies suggested that even slightly increased fluoride exposure could be toxic to the brain. Thus, children in high-fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low-fluoride areas. The children studied were up to 14 years of age, but the investigators speculate that any toxic effect on brain development may have happened earlier, and that the brain may not be fully capable of compensating for the toxicity."

It's also been linked to thyroid problems:

(27,247 posts)The Harvard studies indicate a relation between fluoride and developmental problems in children. And the years of fluoridation may be one reason why the health of Americans in general seems to be worse than the health of people of similar age groups in other advanced countries without fluoridation.
On a trip back to the US once in my mid-40s I had to see a doctor about a minor problem. I noted in my paperwork that I was not taking any medications, and the staff were surprised about that. But here in unfluoridated Japan, it's the rule, rather than the exception.
And speaking of Japan, kids' teeth seem to be, overall, in as good shape here as they are in other advanced countries, whether or not those countries have fluoridated water.

The keys to this are better access to and information about dental care, and better dental care practices by the individual.

(38,187 posts)I wish I could have talked to you about that in private first. Admitting smoking on DU will bring down the worst nagging and hatred ever imaginable on this site. Probably 99.9% of the people on this site actively hate smokers. It is clearly not the cigarettes they hate. They hate US. They are more forgiving and lenient with child molesters around here than they are smokers. I hope this slips by. I certainly won't bring it up. I would hate to see you go through what the rest of us on this site have gone through. We really need a top secret smoking club around here to get away from that bunch. They hate us. They really do.
P.S. Now fluoride is evil too. I'm surprised someone hasn't come along and suggested making tea out of some root from a plant at the bottom of a swamp in China to cure fluoride yet.

Why the South has change so much that all the laws restricting peoples right to vote that came back on the books again down in the Southern red states just did not happen recently.

(53,661 posts)But it's a myth that there isn't another crop of 'em coming, or that it isn't here already. Take a look at the freshman class of 2010 and 2014. They are younger than most of DU and are not going to stop carrying on like they are. Get ready, this is sooo not over with yet. We're into an era of generational warfare, militarily and politically. The righties are more than able to keep going, they always have been. It's only our actions that prove what we believe in that will hold them off. I just don't see much of that at DU.

People also act like they've been pretty pushed back forever or something, Jim Crow is totally in living memory and the blowback reaction would easily be running through the national system.
