LINCOLN — The Nebraska Legislature took a step Thursday toward strengthening job protections for pregnant and breast-feeding women.

Legislative Bill 627 cleared the first of three rounds of consideration on a 31-0 vote.

State Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha, whose first child was born last year, introduced the measure. He called it a “simple matter of fairness” for pregnant women and a way to help those women provide for their families.

“Women shouldn’t have to make an all-or-nothing choice between working and a healthy pregnancy,” Mello said.
