Critic Robert Christgau wrote of the Pogues' cover that vocalist Shane MacGowan "never lets go of it for a second: he tests the flavour of each word before spitting it out."[6]

Having listened to "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" countless times, I'd have to agree.

This was actually asked of me by a former employer affectionately known as the Little Dunce (he stood about 5'6", and well, you know the rest )! And he graduated from Williams, which puts him right up there with Ivy League dunces like Cotton and Cruz!!

Annual Celtic Colours Festival, Nova Scotia years ago. (those who can get there, should)... I loved all the performers, but found her especially capitivating, though I don't speak/understand a word of Gaelic. Her voice is tremendous.

and she looked a lot like that when I saw her--sort of a punk rock vibe, even though she is singing really traditional gaelic songs.

I have a couple of her earlier CDs... Might have to check out her more recent work.

Here is the University College Dublin, Ireland, performing--

"The Parting Glass"

Of all the money that e'er I spent
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that ever I did
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

If I had money enough to spend
And leisure to sit awhile
There is a fair maid in the town
That sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
I own she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

I grew up listening to and singing Irish music, so it's impossible to choose, really. But when I heard this as an older woman, I really heard it, and it felt like it was for Joe, still alive but far away and lost in alcohol. Brings tears to my eyes.
