What started as a search for music online - purely homework procrastination - would change Lizzie Velasquez's life.
She was 17 when she stumbled across a YouTube video entitled "The World's Ugliest Woman". What she didn't expect was that the woman featured in the video would be her. It was an eight-second clip and had been watched over four million times.
She didn't realise it was her until it started playing.
"I was shocked," Velasquez recalls, "but it wasn't until I started to read the comments that my stomach really sank."

(13,869 posts)put the OP in a better context. I don't really know what else to say. How hard must it be to live with that genetic condition, and people can be so cruel. She is so very strong to keep on keeping on like she has.

(58,660 posts)It has contributed to the coarseness and hatefulness of our society in a big way. It's really easy to be "honest" when there are no real repercussions to hateful speech and actions. I use air quotes because they fit. Attacking this young woman because of an unfortunate medical condition is as low as it gets. Doing it publicly is, yes, bullying, and says far more about the posters than about her.

(3,747 posts)That was a well-made video, and she's pretty funny. And I'm amazed that she could come back out swinging at the hate that's out there.
