On a crowded train on my way home from work I was sitting in those seats that face one another. Most of us regular commuters have a monthly ticket that we just display for the conductor, but one young woman sitting in this same group of seats handed the conductor her ticket. She had an off peak ticket so the conductor informed her that she would need to pay the extra $4 required to make the peak fare.
The young lady, from out of town as it turns out, said she had no cash but offered to pay with a credit card - the railroad doesn't take credit cards on the train. The woman conductor then said, and I quote, "IN THE BIGGEST CITY IN THE WORLD, WITH ATMs EVERYWHERE, YOU DON'T HAVE ANY CASH!?" I don't know why so many of the conductors behave this way, but there are quite a few that do.
I couldn't let it pass. I told the conductor "Don't speak to her like that, it's uncalled for." And then the conductor tells me "this is between her and me." To which I said, "no it's not you're being rude."
Another guy sitting with us gave the young lady the $4 to pay the additional fare and the conductor, butts in again and says, "I hope you take this man's address and repay him." Again, wtf, I couldn't let it go and expalianed, "now THAT is none of your business and is between HIM and HER." Not sure the conductor gave a fuck, but...
I hate assholes... too many of them to count these days, it seems.

Me (Metro-North regular but LIRR newbie): (silence)
Conductor: (at maximum volume) "I SAID ALL TICKETS!!"
There are some really nice conductors, but also some real jerks. A couple of months ago I left my wallet on the counter in the morning and I was answering email on my phone when the conductor came by I told him I forgot my wallet. He asked if I had any money and I tol him no that's in the wallet. So he says sarcatically "but you didn't forget your phone did you?" Can't just give you the form to fill out to be billed, they have to berate you too for some reason.

(5,018 posts)Working people everywhere are under such pressure, that while I would have hoped I would have done exactly what you did, what I would not do or never do is report working people to their supervisor (not saying you did, you are just giving me an opportunity to make this point) unless they are way way out of bounds.
I always tell people when I am pissed at something that it isnt their fault, they are just trying to earn a living.
But no excuse for this conductor to act this way, but given the stress we are ALL under as the 99%, I am surprised it isnt a whole lot worse
I salute you and your fellow passenger

(17,505 posts)YOU AREN'T SET UP FOR CREDIT CARDS??????
(Just to play devil's advocate..... Imagine how many people trying to get out of paying by acting dumb.... and more.... he may have had to put up with)
The trick is to not care what he thinks.
Of course I would have come back with what I said above.... and probably added, "I guess that's too complicated for conductors to handle."

(11,086 posts)At first, I thought Tokyo. It has the largest metropolitan area population of 37.8 million, but inside the city limits it only has 9 million. Chongqing (what we used to call Chungking) has about 28.8 million.
Okay, I'm sure the incident was in New York, because America must have the biggest of everything. Yet, according to those foreign lovers at Wikipedia, New York only ranks 25th by population. By area, it isn't even the largest in the United States.

(23,156 posts)I mean, I would never suggest carrying large amounts, but at least twenty bucks.
However, there are plenty of people out there who never have cash on them, and what is appalling is that the train isn't set up to take a credit card.
I know I would have immediately pulled out my walled and given the conductor the four dollars for the woman. And if she wanted my address to pay me back, I'd just tell her to pay it forward someday.

God talks to them, but hates the rest of us.
They never make mistakes ( not any to which they will ever, as long as they live, admit ) and you must pay dearly if you make one.
They come in all genders and sizes and hues and creeds.
But there's nothing wrong with people, because most of us aren't that way.

(39,451 posts)Yes, I was hungry enough to get a wrap & fries.... and that's hungry!
The girl gave me the wrong order. When I sat there at the closed drive-thru window waiting for her to come back, I told her that she gave me someone else's order & gave it back to her.
So she threw the bag with my order at me.
You betcha I called that phone number on my receipt before I even left the parking lot.

(38,313 posts)On the other hand I'll bet this conductor would get in trouble with his boss if he didn't make a big scene with every non-paid or underpaid rider. Knowing the way many businesses work in the U.S.A., I'll bet the railroad occasionally sends out spies to test their employees.
Polite insistence and problem solving are rare skills, and it's part of U.S.A. culture to become highly indignant if they think anyone is getting a "free ride."
People who can't pay the fare for any reason must be punished.

(7,947 posts)Maybe she doesn't, and is just an asshole.
She was right that it was between her and the women without the cash. You're right that the cash transaction was between her and the guy that gave her $4. Both arguments were going nowhere, but the cash saved the day.
