And it doesn't cost much to sit home and watch TV. I think you're right, but I don't think it's because people wouldn't love to travel. It's because they can't afford it, and even for fairly wealthy people, maybe can't afford it without creating some stress.

For example many Japanese seem to travel about Japan more then overseas. In England they seem to enjoy traveling abroad. (I have often met many tourists from the UK at Fisheman's wharf for example.) A lot of countries probably have people who can not afford to travel. I have also asked people on line if they ever wanted to visit the United States and they told me this is a dangerous place, because of all the gun ownership here, and stories in the papers about murders, and minorities being killed by police. It is understandable if people from Europe or Asia don't want to come here!

And I love to travel, but right now the world is too expensive for me... Maybe someday they will have virtual travel, where you can throw on a headset, plug in to a station and take a virtual 3d tour of some place. It will be just like being there! Infact, it might even lead to a new word in the English language... "Hey have you ever been to France?" "No, but I VIRTURED there and it was lovely!"

and tastes.

But, mostly the people. I loved the different attitudes, culture, smiles, frowns, the whole experience of communicating with "ordinary" people. And, exploring the backroads. In Japan, on their wonderful trains (even in the early '60s when I was there), I would sometimes just get off at a small town or village and just wander around. Have a cup of tea or coffee and chat with the other customers and the waitress or cook. In broken Japanese/English but even in gestures and facial expressions.

We rented cottages for a week at a time in various parts of England and met our neighbors, shopped in the local shops, had meals at the pubs.

Now, we're too old, and set in our ways to do that but we treasure those times.

But two things have gotten in the way of that, one being money and the second, I need to improve my Nihongo before I go. I want to be fluid in Japanese!

To take the Shinkansen and travel up and down Japan would be lovely. From Hokkaido to Hiroshima and maybe on to Okinawa. I would also love to visit all of Asia.. Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia.. China, Taiwan! The people who do get to do that are so very fortunate.

I was in the marines and stationed on Honshu at Atsugi Air Station from November 1962 through November 1963. I didn't get out of Honshu and never even made it to Tokyo. But, I loved Yokohama and the villages and towns in between. Of course, then, the war was a distant memory and some (well deserved) hostility towards GI's. But, we wore civilian clothes and the travel was cheap by train. Even in civvies it was pretty easy to tell the GIs and I got my share of dirty looks but, for the most part, the Japanese people I met were wonderful and infinitely more courteous than we rather unwelcome visitors.

We spent 6 weeks at an airfield in Taiwan. It was wonderfully green but very hot and we weren't allowed much time (a couple of days only) to get around much. And, it was still under a military dictatorship then. We saw more soldiers than ordinary people.

Go, if you can.

They are afraid of the unknown which is why the same restaurants and stores are found in every shopping center in every state. My boss is a good example of this, for the last 22 years, his family has spent 2 weeks each summer at the same beach. They won't even consider trying a different beach. They are afraid of the unknown.

Me? I've been lucky enough to travel almost everywhere.

I haven't done either in a while, I now have a hobby for which I use my vacation time.

This poll seems vaguely judgmental. When I've traveled abroad it was fun, but there is a lot of hassle and it was exhausting coming home. Sometimes a quiet vacation is what the mind and body need, so it doesn't necessarily indicate ignorance and fear to take it easy for a week or two.

And some people just prefer a very quiet life. We all have different interests.

I was watching a video (Begin Japanology) which seemed to show how the people of Japan deal with vacation time. One woman decided to get out of the city and go live on a farm, with her son for a week. They were involved with farm chores, like feeding pigs, and gathering eggs, and picking crops. Her son totally enjoyed it.

It also showed many going to Roten buro, Onsen and other forms of Japanese resorts in places like Hokkaido and Okinawa. Okinawa is famous for their beach resorts. Another family chose to visit places in Japan that feature new kinds of cuisine.

Not many chose to visit over seas, but there were many who did. Some even have come to the US. I have met some interesting visitors at Fisherman's Wharf, many who were visiting the United States for the first time.

I've never cared to travel. My parents have always loved travelling. They used to leave my brother and I with neighbors so they could go vacationing (those neighbors did the same to us and dropped of their kids too as they went globe-trotting).

I'm content to stay put. At the most, I sometimes enjoy a road trip.

My family (parents and sibling) constantly put me down because I don't have the travelling bug. Like there's something inherently wrong with not wanting to travel, and that I'm some type of ignorant moron because I don't travel (despite the fact that 99% of their travelling has been to the same corner of the world because they like the beach. On resorts, no less.) Apparently, according to them, I'm just pretending I hate to travel because I cannot afford it. But that's typical of my parents - assume that everyone must love all the same things they do, and if they don't there is something seriously wrong about them. Because I'm their daughter, they must make up excuses for me (like I only 'hate' travelling because I cannot afford it) because I certainly couldn't ACTUALLY have a different opinion of things.

Oops, sorry, that obviously touched a nerve, lol. Yeah, I don't like the whole "if you don't travel then you cannot possibly be educated about the world" vibe some people give off. There are ignorant assholes who are well travelled and learn nothing, and there are people who never leave their town who are very knowledgeable about different countries around the world (although, certainly, there is something to be said about first hand experience - if one makes the effort to learn on that 'experience.')

The one thing I found is that language aside, people want mostly the same things everywhere I went. Above the Arctic Circle in NW Russia, or on Native American reservation in Nebraska. People want to care and be cared for, and they want to know and trust the people near them.

40. That's a loaded question because it depends on which group of Americans
Fri Mar 20, 2015, 04:14 PM

I remember when I was in High School I was in this High School singing choir that you had to audition to be accepted into. Each year we would do a big trip somewhere and the first year I was in the group the trip was to Mexico City.

I had an amazing time, it was the first time out of the country. Mind you I was still having a tough time fitting in with the other kids in the group and my school since they saw me as this freak listening to rock music and not seeming very 'Christian-like' but there were a few girls I got along with for the most part.

But one of those girls who I did hang out with, her parents were chaperones. And the entire time her parents complained about the trip. They complained about the food, the accomadations, the poverty, the culture, the fact that people spoke other languages. And they constantly talked about how they would just rather travel in their RV on vacation so they could have all their modern comforts of home with them.

Needless to say by the end of that trip I pretty much felt like an outside to my own school but thankfully there were other schools from across the country and from Mexico as part of this competition and I ended up making new friends. So I still had a great time. Realized that maybe the whole world wasn't as closed-minded.

So I guess my answer is this - it really depends on the Americans you are talking about because for some I guess they want to sit in front of the TV because they just enjoy the comforts of home where they are surrounded by what they know, the food they enjoy, people who speak english and maybe the guns to protect them. But I don't think that is all of America, just a slice of it - I think more people are starting to walk away from that type of lifestyle and would rather see what else is out there and experience life for themselves.

You will have lines and screaming kids, even if its a little country store in a small town. I love the City, and believe me, I can find almost anything I desire here. But I weary of taking the train or a bus with so many people crammed in like sardines. Cabs are fine, but expensive. It costs you at least 20 dollars to go across the city, and 20 dollars back by cab. I could have had a car, but there is no place to park it in the city, not without getting a ticket.

At least when I travel, it tends to be comfortable, and the one feature I love is having a hotel with a Bathtub. Living in a place with just a shower, is not fun. I want to go soak in a hot tub or hot spring..I guess we have them here, but its gonna cost big money.

If I ever go to Japan, I want to visit an Onsen, Roten Buro or Sento, the public baths. To sit and soak in a nice hot bath would be lovely!
