Florida man is dead

Mattress flies from back of truck, killing Florida man

http://www.nbc-2.com/story/28528442/mattress-flies-from-back-of-truck-killing-florida-man

OVIEDO, Fla. (AP) - A central Florida man is dead after the mattress he was riding on in the back of a pickup truck sent airborne and dumped him on the road.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident happened Sunday afternoon as the truck traveled down a Seminole County road.

Sgt. Kim Montes says the unsecured mattress was on top of some debris the truck was carrying. It flew from the vehicle, carrying 51-year-old Paul Ginther Jr. with it. The truck was driven by 48-year-old Kenneth Connell.

So close the first time I ran right over the thing. Fairly high speed freeway traffic is something you don't really want to brake and swerve in.

Since then I have learned to give ALL inadequately secured loads or homemade trailers and other road nonsense a wide berth. Really better to be IN FRONT of crap like that.

It can be fine to load stuff in a pick-up and move it on neighborhood street. But things happen fast at freeway speeds and things become wings and missiles.

Feel bad for folk. Because if you are moving heavy furniture by yourself. And you can't even afford the U-Haul you are likely in bad circumstances and also very likely exhausted physically, emotionally and every other way.

The comments above are not intended to give release for how horrible life is. The Monty Python skit is, and it was very funny. It wouldn't be funny if placed in the comments section of a news report of one of the many people crucified in the Middle East. Then it would be sick and cruel. Get the difference? The is a real clear difference.

I'm sure have been occasions when dark humor having to do with your own condition were entirely appropriate and helpful. But it depends on the person using the humor and when they do it. And I would guess it is possible you, or someone else, with thinner skin, in a similar situation, might NEVER appreciate dark humor about the occasion coming from me, a total stranger with zero understanding of you or your sensitivities, simply so I could demonstrate my "clever" humor to my peers on DU.

considering the circumstance, buy it's best not to assume everybody else's sensitivity about things like this matches your own. Black people are free to joke with each other about the n word or Jim Crow if they want, but I shouldn't be surprised if they took offense if I, a white person, did the same thing here on DU. It's all about situation and circumstance. Sometimes foul language is funny, other times highly inappropriate and offensive.

One of 3 things is happening here:
1--You really don't get why this man's tragic and bizarre death just isn't fodder for a good joke to most intelligent adults
2-- You get it but you'll argue to the death rather than just say this "humor" just isn't funny
3-- Slipping on banana peels, pies in the face, and an hour long video of guys getting hit in the nuts just puts you on the floor
Whatever the case, any further argument from me is just futile and I'm not wasting any more time. bye

Was that offensive?

You're exaggerating. It's not that dying is funny, but the way he was sitting on a mattress on a truck and it flew off. But you are attributing to other persons your false version of "all dying is funny." Like when you accused me of laughing at videos of "people being killed" generalizing from this particular way of being killed to all ways of being killed. This is a bad faith way of arguing. You're avoiding the actual issue. You could come out and say no one should ever laugh at anything related to death in any way. In which case you should object to a lot of comedy. I would think you would call for American's funniest Home Videos to go off the air. No one gets killed, but some of those people might have gotten some bruises. Getting injured is not funny. So it follows you would object to all that.

Boudreaux and Thibodeaux are watching the evening news when they see a report of a man threatening to jump off the roof of a tall building in New Orleans.

Boudreaux tells Thibodeaux, "Hey watch dis guy. I bet you 40 dollars he jumps off dat roof."

Thibodeaux thinks about it a little and replies, "Okay, I'll take dat bet!"

A few seconds later the man jumps to his death.

Thibodeaux pulls out his wallet, cursing, and hands Boudreaux two twenties. Boudreaux giggles and says, "Thibodeaux, I gotta told you something yeah. I already saw dat. He jumped already on da 12 o'clock news."

Thibodeaux says, "Me too I saw it on da 12 o'clock news, but I didn't think that couillon would be stupid enough to jump again!"

couillon - pronounced "coo yahn," and generally means something like "that crazy idiot"

Mar 2015

Or agree to disagree.

Nowadays funerals look at people's lives, and the eulogy is about how they were. Maybe good old Paul was a crazy-fun guy. He certainly was adventurous.

Or maybe there is some element of our not minding about the people we don't know. We don't know he or his family and so can focus on the crazy way he died. But mostly, I think people will look back fondly after the first shock is off and talk about the things they did throughout their lives.

You've never laughed at anything in spite of yourself?

It's starting to sound rather prim. Like "I never do wrong things like that" and enjoy berating people who are not perfect.

I don't mean it to be heartless, but sometimes even death can happen in a way that just makes you laugh. I guess it's the same impulse that makes you laugh when you watch those American's Funniest Videos where people are falling off of trampolines and the like. Doesn't mean we don't feel bad for the people involved at the same time.

Paul being killed is not funny.

But the way he "became a passenger" of the flying mattress is. We can separate that from his death. Suppose it would have not been funny had he survived it somehow without a scratch?

I would think you'd find the whole "Florida Man" thing offensive, too. A lot of those involve mishaps, sometimes including death.

If the southerners can or want to make fun of the North, go right ahead but it will be difficult finding material IMHO.

The guy made a dumb mistake. He doesn't get to unmake it. It wasn't the sum total of who he was as a person. Turning his death into a public joke just makes it that much more painful for his friends and family members.

I speak as someone who has seen my friends' lives and memories reduced in the public media to their final mistakes (never in such a noteworthy fashion, but still). It's awful.

AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Results of your Jury Service

On Fri Mar 20, 2015, 02:30 PM an alert was sent on the following post:

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

This whole thread is gravedancing over the unfortunate, last deadly mistake of a nobody. DU is a popular website that shows up prominently in google searches, and it isn't out of the realm of possibility that his friends and loved ones might see this thread full of strangers laughing at him. It's in extremely bad taste and undermines what DU is about.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Mar 20, 2015, 02:35 PM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is Weird Newish but not hide-worthy.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Idiotic but tragic incident. But idiotic objection, also.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It is called General Discussion. It's also a news story.

Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Welcome to the Internet. Is it your first day here?
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Uh, seriously? Having a humorless day, alerter?
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Alerter, are you serious! You are kidding, right? Please tell me you just wanted to waste people's time...please....
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Oh good gawd! Relax! This a message board not a freaking church! Gimme a break!

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
