http://getschooled.blog.ajc.com/2015/03/18/white-guys-win-again-was-this-college-catalog-cover-the-loser/Its a valid question given the awkwardness of the image and its pairing with a headline that asks, Why follow when you can lead?
The illustration features two exultant white men dressed like missionaries for some reason well ahead of a woman in heels wearing what looks to be an ensemble from Dynasty and a black male in more casual attire who appears to be struggling to finish the race.
I thought the cover was a parody, a sort of Mad Men meets Peachtree Road Race. Its not, although there are some mad men and women commenting on the cover on Facebook.

(41,831 posts)The other day I was walking on this one street in San Francisco, and walked by a Porn shop that seemed to sell videos and dvds. The window advertisements showed all ASIAN models in skimpy clothing, and provocative poses...I Couldn't believe my eyes... I GUESS who ever the owner is, thinks we are all "sluts" and "porn superstars" cause there were only Asian women in the display.
Geesh, I am all for equal opportunity employment, but come on!!
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I've seen stuff like that before. The exotic (submissive) fantasy. They could have at least mixed it up a bit! Kinda creepy and I guess you know what the owner thinks about.
yuiyoshida
(41,831 posts)quite far from Chinatown and Japantown. Yes, I am sure they have all KINDS OF PORN there, I didn't go in, and I have been by other porn shops, I just don't remember seeing one like this, that had ALL Asian women in the window. It was kind of creepy. I remember thinking, I best move along, and not linger!
woolldog
(8,791 posts)Plus San Francisco as you probably know is a city with one of the highest concentration of Asians in the country. That might have something to do with it.
I don't thin that it's that people think Asian females are sluts.

(41,831 posts)In San Francisco, though the city might have a lot of Asians, this is where the big guys go to work. Men in suits and ties, and looking like they can throw around a thousand dollars for lunch.

(53,778 posts)I mean the black guy is dead last even behind a woman in heels.
Let's see . . . winning sprinters are usually black guys from Jamaica or the US as far as I can remember.
I'm an ex-magazine art director and I know how these illustration concepts are arrived at. It usually starts with a meeting between the editor, the art director and the writer. Different ideas are discussed until one is decided upon. So the position of the different "runners" in the piece would have been decided in that meeting meaning that having the black guy dead last was important reinforcement of preferred racial pecking order.
The idea is then sent to the illustrator who will have his/her own ideas but if the editor wants a specific concept drawn, that is what becomes the cover.
That seems to be the case here.
Racism marches on.

And the women portrayed running, or at the starting line has 4 inch heels - it's the only thing they sorta got right - women have to run the race hobbled by what society expects (her to wear).

(8,791 posts)Things like this cover subtly enforce racial and gender hierarchies and have an effect on those who view them. They reflect racism and more perniciously make us all a little more racist and sexist...precisely because the cover of a catalog seems so harmless

(2,841 posts)I mean a University using a stock picture, they couldn't find students to volunteer for a picture? That's pathetic.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)Are high. They'd have to maintain the students consent and photo release documents indefinitely, and the students can change their minds on a whim. They also have to get permission. Each time the photo is used in a new medium. Professional models are paid and an agency usually has the models power of attorney, and will keep all of their personal details and make sure they get paid.
This is why political campaigns will always use stock photos.

(2,841 posts)I'm sorry I too thought this was a parody from the Onion or something. lol But yeah I think a better cover would have been all four crossing the finish line together. A stupid mistake on part of the university, especially with race relations so strained nowadays in American society.

Would it be OK for the black man to be in the lead but with the woman in last? What if both white men were in last? And why is it better for white woman to be in the lead instead of a black man or vice versa? What should have been on the cover?
