White guys win again. Was this college catalog cover a loser?

http://getschooled.blog.ajc.com/2015/03/18/white-guys-win-again-was-this-college-catalog-cover-the-loser/

A reader sent me a copy of the cover of the new University of North Georgia continuing education catalog asked with this question, “Are they crazy?”

It’s a valid question given the awkwardness of the image and its pairing with a headline that asks, “Why follow when you can lead?”

The illustration features two exultant white men — dressed like missionaries for some reason — well ahead of a woman in heels wearing what looks to be an ensemble from “Dynasty” and a black male in more casual attire who appears to be struggling to finish the race.

I thought the cover was a parody, a sort of Mad Men meets Peachtree Road Race. It’s not, although there are some mad men and women commenting on the cover on Facebook.

The other day I was walking on this one street in San Francisco, and walked by a Porn shop that seemed to sell videos and dvds. The window advertisements showed all ASIAN models in skimpy clothing, and provocative poses...I Couldn't believe my eyes... I GUESS who ever the owner is, thinks we are all "sluts" and "porn superstars" cause there were only Asian women in the display.

Geesh, I am all for equal opportunity employment, but come on!!

I mean the black guy is dead last even behind a woman in heels.

Let's see . . . winning sprinters are usually black guys from Jamaica or the US as far as I can remember.

I'm an ex-magazine art director and I know how these illustration concepts are arrived at. It usually starts with a meeting between the editor, the art director and the writer. Different ideas are discussed until one is decided upon. So the position of the different "runners" in the piece would have been decided in that meeting — meaning that having the black guy dead last was important reinforcement of preferred racial pecking order.

The idea is then sent to the illustrator who will have his/her own ideas but if the editor wants a specific concept drawn, that is what becomes the cover.

That seems to be the case here.

Racism marches on.

And the women portrayed running, or at the starting line has 4 inch heels - it's the only thing they sorta got right - women have to run the race hobbled by what society expects (her to wear).

Things like this cover subtly enforce racial and gender hierarchies and have an effect on those who view them. They reflect racism and more perniciously make us all a little more racist and sexist...precisely because the cover of a catalog seems so harmless

Are high. They'd have to maintain the students consent and photo release documents indefinitely, and the students can change their minds on a whim. They also have to get permission. Each time the photo is used in a new medium. Professional models are paid and an agency usually has the models power of attorney, and will keep all of their personal details and make sure they get paid.

This is why political campaigns will always use stock photos.
