The government of Puerto Rico announced on Friday (20 March) that the US territory will no longer defend its ban on same-sex marriage in court.

Secretary of Justice César Miranda told reporters that Puerto Rico has denied rights that others enjoy. This is not correct.'

Miranda and Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro García Padilla (pictured) are requesting that the commonwealth's legislature to amend the civil code which currently states that 'no recognition will be given to marriages between persons of the same sex contracted in other jurisdictions.'

Puerto Rico's ban on same-sex marriage was enacted in 1999.
