Chuck Todd: Fox and MSNBC Primetime ‘Hasn’t Been Healthy for Politics’

the same could very well be said about you, Chuck

We here at Mediaite often describe the cable news networks’ respective primetime commentariat as “echo chambers” for their often insular appeal to partisans, often omitting strong opposition voices. But you’d probably never expect an employee of one of those networks to agree with that sentiment and outright suggest it’s been bad for politics, would you?

Well, during a Tuesday podcast with The Mike O’Meara Show, former MSNBC host and current Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd gave a forthright analysis of how cable news has affected political discourse.

“There’s no point of view to Meet the Press,” he asserted in a clip first flagged by conservative media site NewsBusters. The topic of conversation was how Todd deals with criticism from the right that he works for the “liberal media.”

“I have to say, and the left is now just as aggressive about this,” he continued. “I probably get more heat from the left than the right these days because the left gets just as aggressive at trying to work the refs. They think that we in the, quote, ‘mainstream media,’ overcompensate to the criticism. That’s their argument. Of course, the right says we’re never, so it’s a shame.”

And then he dropped this line about cable news: “I think advocacy journalism, sort of the Fox and what MS[NBC] primetime, those models, that hasn’t been healthy for politics. It’s just not healthy for it. It all goes to one of the explanations why we don’t persuade people anymore.”

Advocacy "journalism?" Please. He's taken MONEY to indulge in "Infotainment."

He is PART OF THE PROBLEM. Ya wanna be a film star, Chuckie? Go to Hollywood!

He came up through the internet, before people started getting a bit picky about what was quality and what was dreck.

for it but it should be pointed out that Rachel Maddow and Morley Safer and a long list of others have done the same gig on that show. Matthews, Crowley, Hannity, Matt Bai who is not even on TV for a living....long, long list of people.

4. why is he being interviewed in the first place, is he hawking a book?

my local npr station promo'd him as the next guest in a up coming on air broadcast of City Arts & Lectures (I think) in San Francisco. scratching my head, why him? he must be selling a book or the corporate nedia (NBC) feels the need to do a PR blitz to improve their image and ratings.

In the radio promo, he was referred to as an award winning, respected journalist blah blah blah.

I almost puked. I could not believe my ears when Linda Hunt chirped the words with the level of honorable reverence usually reserved for intellects, artists and the like. just disgusting.

I'm thinking NBC must be paying quite a sum for this PR, otherwise just doesn't make sense.

6. Chuck Todd is a complete sell out. It is no wonder Harkin's campaign failed.

Todd makes very little sense when he is speaking, as in this quote from the article. " Of course, the right says we’re never, so it’s a shame." He cannot even speak in complete sentences. Most of what he does is suck up to powerful people. That goes a long way in the corporate world where quality and real work are never rewarded. Being a sycophant like Todd is rewarded.

It looks like Todd is signaling that Maddow and Hayes had better start looking for jobs. MSNBC will be completely useless once they get rid of Hayes and Maddow. I like Ed Schultz and Rev Al, but they seem to be on shorter and shorter leashes every day.

It is pretty obvious MSNBC has taken a distinct rightward tilt recently. Todd will say and do whatever it takes to keep taking all that easy money. The loss of Joy Reid's show was very bad. They keep Mrs. Greenspan and the idiotic Cycle ninnies, but get rid of Reid. The suits are not interested in quality.

who use false equivalence and don't call out politicians as often as they should for lying, hate-mongering, etc. (in the name of so-called "objective" journalism) are even more unhealthy for politics.

13. Chuck Todd Defends Not Challenging Republican Lies On Meet The Press
Sat Mar 21, 2015, 08:59 PM
Mar 2015

Todd said that he allows guests to lie on Meet The Press, because if he didn’t, politicians (Republicans) would refuse to be on his show.

During a roundtable discussion with several comedians Meet The Press’s Chuck Todd made excuses for why he lets Republicans get away with saying things that aren’t true.

Lewis Black asked Todd how he put up with guests who babble on with their talking points without barking at them, and Todd’s answer revealed why people don’t trust the media. The Meet The Press host said, “We all sit there, because we all know, the first time we bark is the last time that they do the show. You say something, and sometimes it is last time they will ever come on your show. There is that balance.”
