I'd vote for her any time. We'd benefit greatly with more people like her in Congress. Here's some info:
Barbara Jean Lee (born July 16, 1946) is the U.S. Representative for California's 13th congressional district, serving East Bay voters from 1998 to 2013 during a time when the region was designated California's 9th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She was the first woman to represent the 9th district and is also the first woman to represent the 13th district. Lee was the Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and was the Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Lee is notable as the only member of either house of Congress to vote against the authorization of use of force following the September 11, 2001 attacks.[1] This made her a hero among many in the anti-war movement.[2] Lee has been a vocal critic of the war in Iraq and supports legislation creating a Department of Peace.
Education
Lee is the author of the Shirley A. Chisholm United States-Caribbean Educational Exchange Act, which would enhance U.S. foreign relations with CARICOM nations. This act directs the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to develop a comprehensive program that extends and expands existing primary and secondary school initiatives in the Caribbean to provide: (1) teacher training methods; and (2) increased community involvement in school activities.[30] The bill is named for former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who helped inspire Lee to become involved in politics when Chisholm ran for the Democratic nomination for President; Lee became the Northern California Chair of the Chisholm campaign.
Economic
On September 29, 2008, Lee was one of 95 Democrats to vote against the defeated Emergency Economic Stabilization Act.[31] However, she voted for a modified version on October 3.[32]
Health care
Lee was strongly critical of the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, which places restrictions on health insurance plans providing coverage for abortions in the context of the Affordable Health Care for America Act.[33]
Housing
As a congresswoman for the Bay Area, Barbara Lee has made affordable housing in East Bay area and beyond a top priority. Barbara has supported and backed legislation meant to expand home ownership opportunities, improve public housing quality, and assist the homeless.[34]

(7,321 posts)I spoke with her about running way back in 2003 .. (she looked at me like I was crazy for suggesting it, but thanked me for my support) I really really like Barbara Lee.
This was during the run up to the Shock 'n Awe - she spoke so forcefully, articulately, succinctly, passionately and intelligently - my congress rep was Lynn Woolsey (bless her heart for trying hard and being on the correct side of all progressive issues) But I felt Barbara Lee articulated the issues with a much sharper, clearer strike.
She'd get my support in a heartbeat.. But she knows she doesn't stand a chance, and her work in Congress is so vital. I'd like to see her run for the Senate take Barbara Boxer's seat, since Boxer is resigning. However, Kamala Harris is vying for that position, I support Kamala.. so.. in a quandry except maybe if DiFi resigns..that'd be great.

(11,833 posts)I'm not saying she should or will run for President. If she did I'd vote for her. I'm trying to raise awareness that she has served admirably in the House of Representatives.
Barbara Lee (and for those about to rock) I salute you.

(11,833 posts)Unfortunately, no one of much significance consults with me.
I saw on wiki that she was involved with the Black Panther Party. For me that's a plus. I can only imagine how that would get spun by Fox and the rest of the conservative corporate media, roflmao.
My point in sharing her info here is that there are great progressives in Congress. They can run and win!
We need a lot more of them. More more more!

Thanks for the great thread.
Barbara Lee for President 2016!

(11,833 posts)You mentioned her on another thread & that sparked my interest. I suggest everyone start a thread on a progressive they like.
Barbara Lee started her political career on the local school board & in state government. We need more like her on school boards, in state government, in the house and senate, and as president.
Thanks for mentioning Barbara Lee!

As were millions here & around the world. Especially in New York City. I will always love New Yorkers for suffering the most yet in the large majority opposing the War In Iraq. That's not only love and courage. It's great intelligence and compassion!
It's still tough for me to talk about that time.
We need more representatives like Barbara Lee. More, more, more!

(11,833 posts)I vote for that every time! We need a lot more candidates like that on every ballot. People who stand for their constituents. On real bread and butter issues like raising the minimum wage, day care, health care, the things that matter to people.

(45,319 posts)There is a full length documentary by the same name which I highly recommend.
lovemydog
(11,833 posts)One thing that really struck me from that doc. Shirley Chisholm would say the same things to people in the south that she said to them in the north. No sugarcoating or market testing.
That's what we need more of! More!

(11,833 posts)was not. We need more people in Congress like Barbara Lee. Who will exercise great restraint in authorizing the use of force, and who will not write the President and the NSA blank checks in the name of security.

(11,833 posts)informed people there who keep voting for people like Barbara Lee! I've been to the East Bay area, it's really pretty. My favorite place around there when I last visited was the Sausalito area. And I went to a Giants game. What a great ballpark. Super cool fans too. It didn't feel all 'my team rocks your team sucks' that I've gotten at some other stadiums. It was more like 'it's a great day for a ballgame, let's have fun.' That's how I am in real life so I really had a wonderful time.
