Canadian woman's sealskin purse seized at U.S. border

Source: CBC News

A Corner Brook, N.L., woman whose sealskin purse was confiscated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection says she'll think twice before accessorizing again on her way south. Nora Fitzgerald recently visited a friend in New Brunswick, and they decided to drive across the border from Florenceville at Bridgewater, Maine, to do some shopping.

Fitzgerald brought her sealskin purse on the trip — a gift from her mother. It had been purchased at a craft market on West Street in Corner Brook last year.

... While crossing the border into the U.S., Fitzgerald said the purse caught the eye of a border agent. The woman asked Fitzgerald if the bag was made of real fur. ... Forty-five minutes later — after another agent placed a call to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — Fitzgerald was asked to hand over her bag.

... The U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) prohibits the taking of marine mammals, and puts a moratorium on the import, export and sale of any marine mammal — along with any marine mammal part or product within the United States.

She has rationalized it as the U.S. foolishly thinks seals are on the endangered species list, and our customs agents were on her side.

From the Marine Mammal Protection Act: &quot 6) marine mammals have proven themselves to be resources of great international significance, esthetic and recreational as well as economic, and it is the sense of the Congress that they should be protected and encouraged to develop to the greatest extent feasible commensurate with sound policies of resource management and that the primary objective of their management should be to maintain the health and stability of the marine ecosystem."

Also: "The term "humane" in the context of the taking of a marine mammal means that method of taking which involves the least possible degree of pain and suffering practicable to the mammal involved."
Clubbing and skinning seals alive is inhumane.

Then go to one of our many fine stores where you can purchase items made from any one of a variety of dead animals.

I've seen them behaving badly on numerous occasions, but when I'm with my family it's one of the few occasions I don't speak up in the victim's defense because I know the consequence will be even more shit being dumped on the victim, and perhaps retaliatory harassment of my family.

Waiting several hours just to reach the border, and then having to spend a few hours more waiting in a room full of troublemakers and other people Border Protection didn't give an immediate pass or rejection to is not a nice way to spend the day.

If you look at the endangered species list that the US government produces you will see seals from the north pacific but not from the Atlantic. The manufactures need to identify which seal is involved to stop this confiscation.
