There are increasingly fewer limits to the meanness toward others that can be spawned by the Republican domination of Indianas state government.
Having been thwarted by the federal courts from denying loving same-sex couples to marry in this state, Republicans in the legislature, with encouragement from their administrative leader Gov. Mike Pence, are on the brink of placing into law a provision that allows individuals, religious institutions, businesses and associations to deny service for same-sex weddings or other activities they find objectionable.
... That wont be the end of this, of course. As with several other measures adopted by the GOP super majorities in recent years, it will be challenged in court. Given that Indianas record for defending these laws has been poor, this one may well join that trash heap. Despite that distinct possibility, this legislature and governor forge ahead.
While some may rejoice, we join those who hang their heads in disgust and long for the day when moderation can be restored to our states government so that those with whom the powerful disagree are not targeted with ugly and discriminatory punishment via the sledge hammer of extreme public policy actions.

(21,634 posts)I wonder how long it would take to get this law repealed if business Owner's got together to stop it. By that I mean Muslims refusing to serve women who are not covered, atheists refusing to serve anyone wearing a cross around their neck, etc. Granted I doubt that would happen because most business owners know it is lunacy to turn away a paying customer... but I bet if they did this would be repealed within a week.

(12,629 posts)the potential loss of revenue both for the state itself and that which lines the Repub lawmakers' pockets will win out.
Millions of dollars in tax revenue and business income will be lost if this law goes forward. Several groups have already stated that they will move their conventions elsewhere.
Pence knows that this law will be overturned, he's just shoring up support from the fundies for his presidential run. Hell, he reiterated his intention on signing it into law at a prayer breakfast, no less.

(9,693 posts)General Motors has several plants in Indiana that may have to move out-of-state for fear of breaking federal anti-discrimination laws. Eli Lilly of Indianapolis has already trumpeted that they will look to moving to Lexington Ky or New York State if Indiana keeps up with this archaic behavior.
