Arkansas 'right to discriminate' bill clears Senate, may soon head to governor's desk

March 27, 2015
by Kerry Eleveld

Arkansas is apparently jealous of all the attention Indiana is getting, so it's back for another whack at LGBT hate. They enacted a different hate law last month that prohibited any jurisdictions from passing nondiscrimination protections for LGBT folks. Now they've passed a "religious freedom" bill that will ensure the right to discriminate against LGBT people on religious grounds (i.e. cuz the Bible tells you so).

HB1228, the so-called conscience protection bill by Rep. Bob Ballinger (R-Hindsville) that would allow Arkansans to discriminate against LGBT people based on their personal interpretation of religion, has passed the state Senate by a vote of 24-7. It now heads to the House.

-snip-

The bill could soon be headed to Gov. Asa Hutchinson's desk.

Hutchinson said Thursday that he intended to sign the bill.

Despite initial optimism that Georgia’s discriminatory “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” (RFRA) had been sufficiently halted in committee on Thursday, activists worry that it could still be revived during the last week of the legislative session. The House Judicial Committee could restore SB 129 to its pre-amended form and advance it, or the RFRA could be tacked onto another pending bill.

Georgia’s businesses have been oddly silent on the bill, despite mounting pressure from an organized Stop SB 129 social media campaign and a fomenting backlash against Indiana’s similar law. With its proponents now on record testifying that circumventing nondiscrimination laws is essential to the bill, however, a few more businesses are speaking out.

The Home Depot, which is based in Georgia and had long been futilely boycotted for the American Family Association for it’s LGBT support, responded directly to a ThinkProgress inquiry about SB 129. Stephen Holmes, Director of Corporate Communications for the home improvement company, said, “We’ve been clear on several occasions that we don’t support anything that discriminates.”

Garin Norain, Vice President of Public Relations for the Atlanta Hawks, Georgia’s professional basketball team, told ThinkProgress that the team does not comment on any pending active legislation. But, he said, “We would not support any legislation that discriminates,” noting that the team opposes all forms of discrimination, including on the basis of sexual orientation.

minds, and spirits.

Their existence is the dark hell of walking dead on earth, and all across America right now, these christofascist zombies are celebrating, and feeding on the great sadness they have inflicted on the living.

Because they are already dead, they can't really be blamed, because they have no conscience, and don't know what they do.

The humane thing we the living can do is to pass laws that will keep the vampires under control, in order to minimize the damage they do to all life.

For that you need a good coffeetable book.

Being a Christian is a privileged position in American society; that makes it really hard to claim you’re being oppressed. But they keep trying.

by Amanda Marcotte

Christian conservatives feel aggrieved and they want to be heard. The problem is that their specific grievance---that everyone else hurts their feelings by not admitting we’re inferior---kind of sounds, well, hard to sympathize with. They need something snappier, a reason to claim that they are being oppressed by “anti-Christian bigotry”. The only problem with that is that in a majority Christian nation, most people are actually pretty accepting and even admiring of Christianity. Even if they disagree with right wing Christianity, they don’t do so because it’s Christian but because it’s conservative. Being a Christian is a privileged position in American society; that makes it really hard to claim you’re being oppressed.

Inevitably, then, the temptation to fudge starts to seep in, to exaggerate slights or invent paranoid conspiracy theories about how not getting enough praise and accolades for being Christian is an attempt to shove them out. But when that doesn’t work, well, sometimes it helps to deliberately provoke a situation where someone pretty much has to confront you, so that you can lie and say it’s because you’re a Christian. Indeed, it’s starting to become a pattern that goes something like this:

1) Enter into a community that is, by its nature, inclusive of people of various faiths and beliefs.

2) Break some common rule everyone is expected to follow.

3) Get corrected or punished for breaking the rule.

4) Squeal about how it’s because you’re a Christian and they’re bigots and oppressors.

5) By the time the truth gets out, your story will be an urban legend spread far and wide, and your fellow conservative Christians will never really know the facts.
