Mom of Florida A&M student killed by hazing wants celebrated marching band dissolved

ATLANTA -- The family of the Florida A&M University drum major who died in a hazing incident said the school should disband its celebrated marching band.

Pam Champion, Robert Champion's mother, said on Thursday that the only way to stop hazing in the program is to dissolve it until further notice. "You've got to clean house," she said at a news conference.

Her comment came a day after 13 people were charged in her son's death. Eleven were charged with felony hazing; two face misdemeanor counts.

Champion's death revealed a culture of hazing at the historically black college in Tallahassee, particularly in its marching band. FAMU has suspended the band and set up a task force on curtailing hazing.
