They've argued all these points before, including taking care of the poor via voluntary charity vs taking care of the poor via having the federal government tax you.

The idea that merely mentioning an excerpt from the sermon on the mount is going to cause someone who is in church possibly more than once a week to stare at you like a deer in the headlights right before they surrender to your superior knowledge of the Bible is pretty silly, IMO.

If you want to debate what the Bible does and doesn't say and what it does and doesn't mean with an observant Christian, cool and I hope you win that debate. But winning that debate is very likely going to take more than knowing an isolated verse or two.
