Fourteen Defining Characteristics Of Fascism

(Note: I have had this article rattling around in my documents folder for years. I just thought I would post it.)

Fourteen Defining
Characteristics Of Fascism
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Source Free Inquiry.co
5-28-3

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

God what a shame this country has become. If I had the means to get out of here before the shite really hits the fan, I would do it. I am afraid it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Thank god I live in the Northeast, it could be worse.

23. Who claimed that both parties are exactly the same?

I didn't see that in the post you replied to. And as for myself, I *never* claim that both parties are the same. How telling that you reflexively argue that, though. That is a convenient strawman often used by corporate posters to divert from the *actual* main idea in a post.

In fact, I have repeatedly pointed out exactly the opposite: how the two purchased corporate parties *deliberately* diverge on social issues that are important to people but which the One Percent could not care less about, in order to blackmail people into voting for the predatory economic, war, and police state agenda that the One Percent DO care about and that the parties deliberately share.

Of course, you knew that already. You might even have seen my most recent post about it here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=6231259
Yes, that's certainly the Lesser of Two Evils Scam that corporatists in both parties keep using on us.

Red vs. Blue = Oligarchy Theater for the masses.

Mass spying on Americans? Both parties support it.
Austerity for the masses? Both parties support it.

Corporate education policy? Both parties support it.
Bank bailouts? Both parties support it.

Privatization of the TVA? Both parties support it.
Immunity for telecoms? Both parties support it.
"Looking forward" and letting war criminals off the hook? Both parties support it.
Deciding torturers are patriots? Both parties support it.
Militarized police and assaults on protesters? Both parties support it.
Indefinite detention? Both parties support it.
Drone wars and kill lists? Both parties support it.
Targeting of journalists and whistleblowers? Both parties support it.
Private prisons replacing public prisons? Both parties support it.
Unions? Both parties view them with contempt.
Trillion dollar increase in nuclear weapons. Both parties support it.
New war in Iraq. Both parties support it.
New war in Syria. Both parties support it.
Carpet bombing of captive population in Gaza. Both parties support it.
Selling off swaths of the Gulf of Mexico for drilling? Both parties support it.
Drilling along the Atlantic Coast? Both parties support it.
BUT, we are reminded by sneering corporate Democrats, Republicans will do all of this to us, too, PLUS inflict transvaginal ultrasounds!

What a vicious scam by both parties to justify relentless, predatory evil. To demand that we vote for our own sellout and exploitation and the dismantling of our democracy itself.

So...now that we've determined that your "rebuttal" here is a deliberately distorting, diversionary strawman response to what was actually written, let's return to the ACTUAL point of this thread, which is the systematic dismantling of our democracy itself by corporate Democrats as well as corporate Republicans. And that takes us back to that list I posted. That horrifically long yet only partial list of proactive, vicious, antidemocratic, Bush-style behavior by the Obama administration against the people of the United States, the Constitution, and democracy itself. A list that includes defense, continuation, entrenchment, legalization, and expansion of the very worst, most fascistic aspects of the Bush corporate regime.

Look at the list again. Look at the policies this administration has fought for, relentlessly, and think about whether this is really what you want to deny...and worse, defend.

I have often wondered how those who shilled for Germany in the 30's lived with themselves. Watching contemporary propaganda, I have come to suspect that the coping strategy, at least for those who come to the job with some sort of pre-existing conscience, involves some sort of denial of the actual results of the policies for human beings. Ditto for those who merely repeat the talking points.

The results are devastating. Murderous. The neocon and neoliberal policies, the dismantling of democracy, that corporate Democrats and Republicans including Barack Obama and now Hillary Clinton promise to continue have already murdered millions and consigned millions more...men, women, and children....to poverty and despair. Corporatism is a cancer that destroys democracy and sucks human lives into husks for profit.

That list of policies is important. That list of betrayals of democracy and humanity is important. You can't just wave it away.

There truly are still ways to earn a living in this nation without selling one's soul.

What you just saw was the equivalent of "2+2=5": absurd on its face, but repeated relentlessly.

True to form, we are fed patently absurd denial of reality itself, along with an entirely predictable attempt to divert to personal slur.

It is standard MO and all that remains for those who embrace the odious occupation of defending the indefensible.

Thank you for stopping by to reiterate that two plus two does, indeed, equal four.

WE'RE STILL FREE! WE CAN TYPE ON THE INTERNETS!!!!111!!1
(There's a facile argument around here somewhere...)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5596182

All these indignant denials that we're in trouble take the same form:

We're not being burned alive in ovens, or we're still ridiculing politicians on the internet, or we aren't being lined up in the streets and shot (well, that one's starting to get debatable, isn't it...).

As though the corporate owners of the United States of America, who rely on its reputation as the beacon of freedom and democracy in the world, can't find more effective and less politically damaging means to make sure dissent never materializes into anything seriously threatening to the PTB.

Psst. Our president has a "Kill List." And indefinite detention. And a surveillance state. And an entire secret government, secret laws and secret courts, operating alongside the one we are taught about in school. And all it takes to become part of that is for someone to invoke the word, "terrorism" and relate it to you.

"But that's a high bar!" all the sensible woodchucks will protest. "I TRUST my president! And it's only for TERRORISTS!"

Really? And do you trust the next one?

Actually, we're all being spied on. And "terrorism" is being invoked as a weapon against political dissent.

And the most sinister aspect of all of this is the fact that the language of terrorism and espionage is being actively expanded to include whatever citizens or groups the corporatists consider to be irritants: political enemies, protesters, even journalists.

If you are a One Percenter trying to effectively use the government you have purchased to manage unpleasant press about what you are doing, what do you do? Well, one tactic might be to try to get the government into the business of deciding who is a journalist. That way you can claim to establish "protections" for whistleblowers, when what you are actually doing is creating categories through which you can exclude from protection those you don't want to protect.

Yeah, journalism isn't doing too well in this country. One might say it is being murdered. There's a reason it's supposed to be protected by the First Amendment. That reason is not compatible with increasingly totalitarian corporate control.

So....you shut up the journalists.

And you shut up the protesters.

Who else do you need to shut up?

Ah....all the people who work for the government, many of whom can be assumed to still have consciences and thus be potentially dangerous to the corporate coup of democracy. How do you handle them?

Well, you can fire them. See, it's *useful* for the government of an ostensibly free nation to have highly visible groups like, say, the Black Panthers, etc....and not to deny them employment or do anything serious to them. It gives the illusion of freedom. But look what we learned of just this week, about how government employees are expected to treat Goldman-Sachs. Look at what we learned about how and why firings *really* happen at the Fed:

And look what we learned about why. About our own government's aggressive cover-up of the crimes of Wall Street:

Matt Taibbi: The biggest financial cover-up in history
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025776300

But protecting and actively covering up the crimes of Wall Street criminals and firing government employees who might expose them is just a start. You can also wage legal war against their power to function as whistleblowers. And you assault the unions that protect them:

The Obama administration/DOJ war on whistleblowers, federal unions
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5586389

You can institute draconian snitch rules to intimidate those who might be thinking about whistleblowing:

President's 'rat out your co-worker' plan unlikely to work, experts say
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023214675

And you claim the right to spy on them even at home.

You let the dissent flourish, as long as it's safe dissent. But you take care of the stuff that has the potential to be truly threatening. Most importantly, you make a vicious example of those who carry through with revealing corruption:

Daniel Ellsburg: Snowden would not get a fair trial today, was right to flee US
http://www.democraticunderground.com/11784497
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023198130

Bradley Manning: top US legal scholars voice outrage at torture
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x871563

That includes those who whistleblow on financial institutions, not just the government. Since you're not prosecuting the banking criminals, you have plenty of time to send up a guy who tried to identify them:

Bradley Birkenfeld, UBS Whistleblower, Finds Himself in Federal Prison
http://www.cnbc.com//id/41257962

It's a delicate line to walk, all this intimidation while still claiming to be the beacon of freedom for the world. But the intimidation is necessary, because people are starting to catch on.

No, nobody has sent the jackboots to line up the protesters in front of everyone and methodically kill them. But we're seeing the next best thing.

Militarizing the hell out of the police departments. That way it's blamed on some "programs"....but it sends a clear psychological message to the upstarts.

Stopping police militarization: Once again, the solution requires confronting corporate politicians.
http://sync.democraticunderground.com/10025416709

Federal grants drive the militarization of police departments in America.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025383806

And then you get this:

And this:

Three of the five Occupy violence pics I used to use regularly now I cannot find anywhere on the internet; if I could, I'd put them here, too. The elderly woman tear-gassed, the mobs of jackbooted storm troopers surrounding a few people on a blanket...

And, meanwhile, out in the community, the militarized police are starting to terrorize ordinary citizens, mostly the impoverished and voiceless ones. But the corporate-controlled federal government keeps sending the hardware and the storm trooper uniforms, even encouraging it with grants, and they refuse to keep records on how many citizens have been murdered. How many were there this week?

We're all suspects, potential terrorists now. and the mechanisms are in place to ensure that any dissent that begins to bubble up can be handled and eliminated before it materializes in any serious way.

The truth is that you don't know what dissent may have already been cut off at the root, because of the elaborate, secret, unaccountable system that has been put into place. We know that the president has sought the power to lie in response to Freedom of Information requests. We know that data collected from NSA spying has been used to imprison Americans using false evidence trails. We know that the CIA can spy on the Senate Intelligence Committee with impunity and nothing is done about it, and that Clapper can lie to Congress and the Department of Justice can lie to the Supreme Court about spying and nothing is done. These are just the things we know.

The sensible woodchucks keep telling us that someone has to be actively involved in VERY SERIOUS TERRORISM against the United States of America in order for our government to start throwing *that* word around, or showing an interest in us. But we are all surveilled, and the methods for it keep expanding. If you think about it, it's GOOD for corporate control to have people posting dissent on the internet. It helps you know whom to watch. Voiced dissent is USEFUL as long as it doesn't lead to anything...you know, serious. Our corporate government is keeping an eye on us.

I *could* make a wry comment about the advisability of actually reading some recent political commentary rather than relying on selective (Yes, selective: Note the American Heritage Dictionary definition below) googling of online dictionaries in order to understand current debates over fascism...but that would only assist you in sustaining the charade of feigned ignorance on which your diversionary post relies.

Of course we know you've seen the discussions, and of course you're fully aware of the history and the recent frequent referencing of that understanding of fascism in current political commentary, as in my links below.

But, just like the corporate posters who pretend after 15,000 posts here not to know what the "Third Way" is, or who feign being mystified that anyone disbelieves that they really and truly misinterpreted a comment about Hillary's being "in bed" with corporate interests as a lurid comment on her sexual life, you will play out this transparent pretense of ignorance.

And the cherry on top is that this feigned ignorance is not even the *most* embarrassing aspect of your flailing here. The *most* embarrassing part is that your previous huffy rejection of the word, "fascism" as a description of what we face in America today is completely undercut even by the definition you yourself DO choose to cite from Merriam-Webster. Nationalism, autocratic government, increasingly severe economic regimentation (at least for the proles), and forcible suppression of opposition: all prominent in the post to which you originally replied.

Here's the important take-away you keep trying to avoid. Might as well make it explicit:

*All fourteen points disturbingly describe the United States of America under its current, corrupt corporate government.

*All fourteen points are disturbingly reminiscent of fascist regimes of the past.

*And all the spinning, feigned ignorance, and rhetorical tap dancing in the world do not change that devastating Main Idea of the OP.

Now, you, of course, will continue in similar vein. I'm done now, though, because I think the pattern here is sufficiently clear.

You have a nice day, now.

and then decided in 2012 that he was doing such a great job spearheading their fascistic corporate-controlled autocracy, that they would install him for another 4 years?

And was Obamacare just a part of the fascist plot?

fully-realized fascism tends toward the one-party state. As such, 2016 offers the very scary prospect that Republicans will further consolidate that one-party state. That should make everyone who posts here (including site admins and owners) very nervous, I think. Prudence would suggest drawing up contingency plans now or soon in the event such a development occurs. I can foresee things getting very ugly very fast -- as though they're not already really ugly -- in an America where Republicans control executive, legislative and judicial branches.

I'm perfectly willing to be dismissed as merely a 'nervous Nellie' and indeed fervently hope I'm not like some doomed Cassandra.

Yes, that's certainly the Lesser of Two Evils Scam that the two colluding corporate parties keep using on us.

The two corporate-owned parties deliberately diverge on some non-economic social issues that are important to people but which the One Percent could not care less about, in order to blackmail people into voting for the predatory economic, war, and police state agenda that the One Percent DO care about and that the parties deliberately share.

Red vs. Blue = Oligarchy Theater for the masses.

Mass spying on Americans? Both parties support it.
Austerity for the masses? Both parties support it.
Cutting social safety nets? Both parties support it.
Corporatists in the cabinet? Both parties support it.
Tolling our interstate highways? Both parties support it.
Corporate education policy? Both parties support it.
Bank bailouts? Both parties support it.
Ignoring the trillions stashed overseas? Both parties support it.
Trans-Pacific Job/Wage Killing Secret Agreement? Both parties support it.
TISA corporate overlord agreement? Both parties support it.
Drilling and fracking? Both parties support it.
Wars on medical marijuana instead of corrupt banks? Both parties support it.
Deregulation of the food industry? Both parties support it.
GMO's?

What a vicious scam by the colluding Red and Blue Teams to ensure the success of their profit agenda and to justify relentless, predatory evil. To demand that we vote for our own sellout and exploitation and the dismantling of our democracy itself.

18. K&R. It is well past time to stop using euphemisms like "centrist" and "moderate"
Sun Mar 29, 2015, 05:51 PM

to describe policies and politicians who are doing nothing less malignant than implementing fascism in the United States of America.

Monied corporate corruption of our government is now deep, systemic, and bipartisan, and it has dismantled democracy itself.

Austerity and attacks on safety nets in a country that has already devastated its middle class are opposed by over 80 percent of Americans across party lines, yet these economic positions are nevertheless described as "centrist," as though they fell in the mainstream of American opinion. Policies coming out of our government now routinely bear little resemblance to what people have repeatedly stated in polls that they want, and neoliberal politicians lie their way through campaigns because they realize how unpopular their positions really are...yet we persist in calling them "centrists."

Secret laws, secret courts, "Kill Lists"/indefinite detention without due process, and mass surveillance in the United States of America are extreme violations of our Constitution and should not be considered "moderate" positions in any sense of the word. They are extreme, even fascistic policies, yet the politicians who espouse them are permitted by us to describe themselves as "moderates."

We desperately need to start using the words, "corporatist," "extreme," and even "fascist" to describe what is happening in this country under the corporatist/neoconservative/neoliberal/Third Way agenda. We are witnessing a malignant merger of state and corporations and the active dismantling of our Constitution. The corporate state is pouring our tax dollars into propaganda and marketing for their agenda, and IMO the vast majority of Americans, while aware of their own economic pain, have little understanding of the peril facing our democratic institutions and basic Constitutional protections.

We use words that suggest the current neoliberal and neocon policies are business as usual in America...just another flavor of policies that Americans can trust still fall safely within the boundaries of a democratic, constitutional, representative political system. They are "centrist" or "moderate." But they really aren't. They are fascist. Thank you for posting this again. We desperately need to adjust our labels to drive home the seriousness of the crisis we face.
