Norman Greenbaum (Spirit in the Sky) in critical condition

Last edited Sun Mar 29, 2015, 04:40 PM - Edit history (1)

Here's an excerpt from the local paper:

A motorcyclist was killed and internationally known singer-songwriter Norman Greenbaum was critically injured Saturday in a crash west of Santa Rosa.

The CHP identified Greenbaum, 72, best known for his 1969 hit “Spirit in the Sky,” as a passenger in a Subaru Outback that was involved in the 3:20 p.m. crash on Occidental Road near Piezzi Road.

The identity of the motorcyclist who was killed in the crash was withheld pending notification of his family, but he was believed to be 19 or 20 years old, emergency responders said.

Greenbaum is a longtime resident of Sonoma County. He and a male passenger on the motorcycle were transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with what CHP officials described as critical injuries. Greenbaum remained in critical condition on Sunday morning in the intensive care unit, a nursing supervisor said.

If he was a passenger in that car, not surprising he's critical, based on the impact area--that bike hit the side of the car head on, looks like...wonder if it had side curtain airbags?

Even as an athiest, I always like Spirit in the Sky. I think Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath borrowed heavily from the guitar solo.

Sweet song.
