Wiccan priestess to give invocation to Iowa House--a first in the nation

I debated about posting this on GD, but given all of the legislation around the nation which seeks to exclude and discriminate using religion as an excuse, I think this impending event and the discussion in the article make a valuable point about inclusion. I think we are at a very tenuous and dangerous point in history and Indiana's law is a step by emboldened groups to push an agenda of divisiveness and bigotry which can be expanded to include other groups. I have been following with interest the pushback on this type of legislation by the Satanists in various states. I do not practice any religion and have stated my views regarding religions many times on this forum. Currently, this discussion needs to center around not whether or which religion is "right" but on the the civil rights and responsibilities we have as citizens to make certain this society includes all. Thus this posting.

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Wiccan priestess has been invited to give the invocation to the Iowa House of Representatives. On April 9, Deborah Maynard, a member of the People’s Church Unitarian Universalist, will travel to Des Moines to deliver her blessing.
According to Maynard, her prayer will make history.

“I didn’t really think it was that big of a deal, until I did more research on it,” she said. “The more research I did on it, that’s when I found that it’s never been done in a state government body before by a Wiccan.”

A 2014 Supreme Court ruling allowed for sectarian prayer before government bodies, as long as the prayer is inclusive.

I agree. It's a good thing, but let's be entirely clear that it still shouldn't be happening. nt F4lconF16 Mar 2015 #8

This Puritan stranglehold on the throats of our people must be released, so we can breathe.

There is no way, period, to make a religious invocation "inclusive" of atheists. That supreme court ruling was wrong. There's no way around it.
