(75,480 posts)Too bad Katy Holmes had to go practically underground to get away from him and them. I hope one of these days Tom breaks from them too and comes out of the closet something he can't do while they have a hold on him.

(33,688 posts)In the early/mid 1990s I was the retail manager of a large science-fiction/comics shop in Minneapolis. Well known writers occasionally used to stop in to browse and chat. One day Gordon R. Dickson stopped by and got to telling tales of The Old Days of SF.
Gordy was a very good friend of Robert Heinlein, and repeated a story that Heinlein had personally told him. Back in the 1940s Heinlein, Hubbard and, IIRC, Clark Ashton Smith were sitting around having a few drinks at an early SF gathering/convention. After a few belts, Hubbard bet Heinlein and Smith that he could make up a phony religion of his own and make a fortune in the process. Heinlein and Smith thought Hubbard, a hack writer at best, was full of crap and bet Hubbard he couldn't do it. They lost big time, though I don't recall what the stakes of the wager were.

(95,337 posts)I know many religions out there seem like a scam and I'm one to talk because my own faith (christianity) is getting quite a beating lately (Hey I do not stand with those idiots from Indiana).
But I hold suspect any religious leader that uses their faith as a method to gain wealth. Jesus was not a wealthy man, in fact he was a pauper. So that's how I know there are plenty of fakes in my religion.

(8,692 posts)All he did was represent a business that was owed money by the "church" and for that they broke into his house and stole several computers over the years, he, his wife and their daughter were all stalked and his daughter was harassed on campus at UCLA. When he joined the firm we abruptly lost a bunch of entertainment related business.
He was absolutely in awe of it all, just the sheer resources these quacks were able to throw at harassing one lawyer who just tried to get the assholes to pay their bills.
