The "churchy republicans" are in sufficient numbers to favor the GOP. And now the Tea Praty controls everything - newspapers, talk radio, and the TV stations. GOP legislators have tons of money. The democratic party is poor and has lost leaders such as Evan Bayh. The progressive message just doesn't reach enough ears. I agree with you that the GOP will keep control in 2016. Very sad.

They voted for them the first time knowing what they would do. No gerrymandering or suppression needed.

How quickly people forget that Indiana had a Dem governor for 16 years from 1988 - 2004 (Bayh/O'Bannon). Indiana also went blue in 2008, albeit for the 1st time since the 60's. So its not like the state is being overrun with nothing but conservative, bigots. Indiana will always be a republican leaning state, but w/ the way things have been going with Pence, I would not be surprised at all if he loses in 2016.

Now the state house/senate is 67-33 or something like that Rep in the house and 40-10 in the senate. The Reps gerrymandered like a mother in 2010, so they're safe for yrs there, but I imagine it will balance out a little next election.

I think also more folks are talking about the consequence of low voter turnout in 2014.

The Indy business leaders are not going to support Pence for another 4 years. I bet another, more moderate repub gets the nod. Pence will either step aside to run for pres (good luck with that), or will be offered some business oppty he can't turn down. Sort of like when Dan Coates didn't run when it appeared Bayh was going to challenge for his senate seat.

I agree with your assessment above. But I hope that in the ensuing year+ that this fiasco will have tempered the statehouse from acting on their supermajority = "unstoppable and going to legislate as hard relig. right as possible" impulses.

Indiana has a long and proud history of electing bigots:

By 1925 over half the elected members of the Indiana General Assembly, the Governor of Indiana, and many other high-ranking officials in local and state government were members of the Klan. Politicians had also learned they needed Klan endorsement to win office.

closely, and will continue to vote "R" again, and again, and again, and again...

Lots of them are the first ones to say that a person's private (romantic) situation is nobody's business, and that a woman should have complete control over her medical decisions ..and so on. But come election time, they still vote "R". Just cuz.
