Update on the Indian man assaulted in Alabama by the police

Former Madison Police Officer Indicted on Use of Unreasonable Force Against a Man He Was Questioning

A federal grand jury late Thursday indicted a city of Madison, Alabama, police officer for using unreasonable force against a man he was attempting to question in February 2015, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta of the Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance of the Northern District of Alabama and Special Agent in Charge Roger C. Stanton of the FBI.

The one-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges that Eric Sloan Parker, 26, while acting in his official capacity as a police officer on Feb. 6 in Limestone County, injured a man by slamming him to the ground. The indictment identifies the victim only by initials, "S.P."

Parker's actions deprived the man in Madison of his right under the U.S. Constitution to be secure from unreasonable seizures, which includes the right to be free from unreasonable force by someone acting under color of law, according to the indictment. An indictment is only an allegation and does not constitute evidence of guilt on the part of the defendant.

Another article:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A former Alabama police officer is charged with violating the civil rights of an Indian man who was injured during a violent confrontation with the officer, authorities said Friday.

Ex- officer Eric Sloan Parker is charged with using unreasonable force that left Sureshbhai Patel partially paralyzed. He was slammed face-first to the ground in the Feb. 6 confrontation, which was captured on video.

The 57-year-old from the western Indian state of Gujarat doesn't speak English.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley previously apologized to the Indian government for the treatment of Patel, calling it a case of "excessive force."

... scratch that; it's been beyond control for a long, long time.

This nation's police force needs a massive overhaul.

there are repubs in the US congress who still can't believe that such people could possibly represent the US government. Hell I left a company who still believes that my blue US passport, security clearances, American accent, and biblical name must all be excellent fakes.

None of that changes the fact that the original 911 call on this man was because someone thought a black drug addict was looking for houses to rob.

I hope this incident with the assault creates some policy changes and can be a wake-up call to excessive force against harmless elderly people.

But it may be too much to ask for regular people to start understanding that not everyone here is white.

Some of my fellow "white" people need to realize that THIS was NOT the right continent to come to, if they were hoping to live in a place with exclusively pasty-skinned, stringy-haired people. People like you and Vanita Gupta, who work hard and respect others and do the necessary work of society, are the people who help to build and improve our civilization. "White" people who meet this standard are also among the regular people. As I understand it, the Gujarati-American family of this man also meets this standard, so they are also regular people. If they want to have a family member visit, then he does indeed have Constitutional rights.

It's worth mentioning that he is reported to have walked a short distance with a walker, and is expected to be released from the hospital soon, but it is not yet clear just how completely he will (or won't) recover.
