The statement, released by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, reads:
"We are aware of the recent actions in Indiana and have made a point to talk about this sensitive and important issue among ourselves and with our teams. Each of us strongly supports the positions of the NCAA and our respective institutions on this matter that discrimination of any kind should not be tolerated.
"As a part of America's higher education system, college basketball plays an important role in diversity, equality, fairness and inclusion, and will continue to do so in the future."
Critics of the bill argue it will allow business to discriminate against individuals based on their sexual orientation. NCAA officials, who do not support the bill, expect protests this week during the Final Four.
Classy.

The right thing would have been to refuse to play there, but obviously they won't do that.

(65,076 posts)I think making it clear that they don't like what's going on is more than an empty gesture.

get the red out
(13,466 posts)Universities are generally working very hard at inclusion these days. A few short years ago there would have been silence from an athletics organization over this.
As a basketball fan, I have a dog...er Cat...in this fight. My Alma mater (and I) are in a bagger state, I am hoping the fan base will be supportive of Coach Cal and the other coaches on this. Hate needs to go.
The story below surprised me. A player from Betsy Lane Kentucky was harassed and his team bus chased by an opposing team at a tournament here in Lexington. What you would expect in KY, but the wonderful thing is that his team rallied around him, the people in his community did as well. Betsy Lane High School is in the heart of Eastern Ky, the Appalachian mountains, I grew up about 40 miles from there. I was very touched by his community's reaction.
