just went to wallmart for the first time in years (by choice)

There have been times I realized I needed something for class and they were the only ones open. But I actually went in there today and bought a gallon of milk and some cat food.

Anyway, thanks Walmart.

Jeez that still feels weird.

"equate ultra protection SPF 50," just 'cause it's highly rated and cheap for 16 fl oz. I never like going there, but will feel a little better now. I'm still amazed they did that ... wonder if they thought it was good for business ...

Yes. They have been trying to get into markets in the northeast and other places for years. This (along with the pay raises) will help them do that I am sure.

but I can't even think of a comparison store as dirty, cluttered, disorganized, chaotic, and generally unpleasant as those super walmarts in busy urban corridors. Uggh. But there is little choice in many areas where they've driven away all competition.

ironically, now that they are trying to change their image, their recently announced pay raises will probably raise wages at all the service industry workplaces in my Podunk town. . I still have a lot of problems with them but I am grateful for what they did on civil rights regardless of their motivation.

They moved their store about a half mile north from where they used to be, and became a supermarket.

The only Mom and Pop food stores anymore in this area are ethnic specialty stores.

I don't do my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart since they don't have what I want.

I go to a supermarket here in Sheboygan that's a Roundy's market.

For most other things I go to a nearby Big Lots.

Generally speaking, socially responsible options aren't really very good.

Sendiks is our neighborhood grocer. It's gone boutique, an ok place to order a lamb shank but with regard to fresh produce they lean heavily on organic which tends to drive away 'those people' who need to save a buck.

in the Twin Cities and they all closed about 15 months ago.

We usually shop at a store down the street that is locally owned, at Cub (SuperValu) and at Aldi.

I hear you. But I don't think you realize how cool this is for me, living in a small conservative southern town where everyone likes chic filet and Walmart. The cognitive dissonance on the part of the bible thumpers must be unbearable.

"Greenwashing" is when a company attempts to appear more environmentally friendly than it really is. For example, BP talking about all the money they gave to environmental groups after the Deepwater Horizon spill.

"Gaywashing" is equivalent, but on LGBT issues. Accusing a company of gaywashing just means they are not as friendly to LGBT people as they claim.

I'm very curious how you managed to translate "gaywashing" into an offensive term. Did you think they bathed the company in the precious bodily fluids of homosexuals?

the "Graywashing" comment. I am thankful that I live at least 100 miles from the nearest wallywerld and flat out refuse to shop there for political reasons AND because they have nothing that I want or need. I focus on mom&pops on purpose, since I have to travel so far to go shopping in the first place, I make sure of where my hard earned $$ goes. Most trips to "the city" included carpooling, often times my fellow travelers plan to go to that store and I try to dissuade them. But they aren't always willing to make the change so I drop them off, go get an oil change or something near-by and pick them up outside the store. I will not even go in and facilitate their numbers by tripping the "people counters" at the entrances. Screw them.

It's too bad for shoppers and communities that they have created captive audiences of entire communities such that there is no place else to acquire the products they want or need.

As a sort of aside, last time I was in one of those stores, I noticed that the majority of products on the shelves - especially in the housewares aisles - were koch conglomerate products from paper towels, toilet paper ans a host of other items on the boycott list. Two evil beasts being fed via mutualism.

I hope your community recovers from the wallyscourge.

I think having only one choice of store for everything is akin to fauxnuze, an entity that tells you "this is your choice, and that's all there is to it, accept and assimilate."

I am very thankful I don't have that kind of problem. I get my perishables at a grocery store - a rather small one - a few miles away but the rest I try to produce myself with a small greenhouse, via barter and very few trips to a near by city. The closest larger town of more than 1500pop. is 85 miles away. Some might see this as a detriment but I see it as an advantage of choice over lack of options. Most folks in my area buy a lot of stuff from Amazon and other online places but I am not one of them. I don't like to buy online and refuse to do my banking and other practices online due to the amount of cybertheft and to some degree anonymity to info hoarders. I only make to a city about five times a year so my exposure to places like wallywerld is extremely limited and I really like that.

I hope your community manages to regain variety for everyone's sake.
