Often Southern states are the focus of histories of slavery in the United States.

But did you know that in the early 1700s one in five residents of New York were enslaved Africans?

Southern states are the focus of slave histories because they started and fought a war Aristus Apr 2015 #1
That's something the northern states don't want to talk about or even remember. In_The_Wind Apr 2015 #2

to preserve it.

By 1861, slavery was illegal in every Northern state.

Mostly they bought them from the locals on the coast who captured them.

Money changed hands there. Plus African tribal wars caused some of African's own to capture and trade for money.

The whole history is so sordid Maybe it is time to revisit but it just would end up in Flame Wars. And, it doesn't excuse the racist stuff that is being revisited by some in the South who continue to stir up hate for their own advantage. But, the money made in the North East from the Slave Trade shouldn't be excused for its origins. Thankfully the Abolitionists in New England managed to erase some of the taint from the Boston Slave Traders....but, they were part of the enabling of the ugly, inhumane business of Slave Trade to go forward...making those who participated very wealthy.
