It was a couple of years ago that I read the biography of L. Frank Baum, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details -- but as I recall he was a traveling salesman for a while and found Kansas the most dismal, unappealing, depressing state he'd ever visited. So when he wanted a starting point that anybody would be happy to escape from, that was what he chose.
