Not long ago I was asked to speak to a religious congregation about widening inequality. Shortly before I began, the head of the congregation asked that I not advocate raising taxes on the wealthy.
He said he didnt want to antagonize certain wealthy congregants on whose generosity the congregation depended.
I had a similar exchange last year with the president of a small college who had invited me to give a lecture that his board of trustees would be attending. Id appreciate it if you didnt criticize Wall Street, he said, explaining that several of the trustees were investment bankers.
It seems to be happening all over.
A non-profit group devoted to voting rights decides it wont launch a campaign against big money in politics for fear of alienating wealthy donors.
A Washington think-tank releases a study on inequality that fails to mention the role big corporations and Wall Street have played in weakening the nations labor and antitrust laws, presumably because the think tank doesnt want to antagonize its corporate and Wall Street donors.

(19,326 posts)The very best silence that money can buy, owned by Wall Street, to cover it's ass while it bleed$ U$ citizen$ dry of resources needed to pay decent wages, to feed and educate our young, to repair crumbling infrastructure, etc.
Thanks Mr. Reich for not genuflecting to Wall St. when the chips are down, because if the chips were ever down, it's now.

(17,216 posts)As in the song about the snake, "You knew I was a snake before you took me in!" Why ask him to speak at all?
I notice, however, that Mr Reich does not document his response to those personal suggestions about the content of his presentations. Shall we assume he was polite and civilized?

(29,503 posts)And it's not only brilliant, but bold and even risky.
I've criticized him for many things, but on this, he's absolutely correct, and I hugely K&R it.

(39,909 posts)I guess the rest don't want to upset their large, wealthy, single source donors.
Bernie Sanders will too, but he isn't a Democrat.

(62,325 posts)willing to take the brunt of Wall St anger, is to follow her lead.
But I can't of any who are publicly backing her up other than Bernie, who as you point out, is not a Democrat.
It is shameful, and the smear campaign against her has already begun.
There is no honor among politicians. No sense of 'she needs our support right now and I'm willing to give up any funding I might have to stand up for what is right'.
So soon we will be seeing more of the smears. The first few salvos from the Third Way (Investment Bankers) failed but that didn't stop them. They then used people they thought would have some influence over us plebs, like Howard Dean. That too has failed.
But they won't stop. She needs support but I'm not hopeful she will get it.

(3,732 posts)This is a ramification of "trickle down": dependence. Nonprofits rely on private donations, so they are careful not to alienate Daddy Warbucks. Rankism weighs heavy.
This is also why I don't do Facebook and strongly suport online anonymity. Rich employers have power over me, and I don't want them writing me off because I don't support Hillary or I joined a Black Lives Matter rally or I rabble-roused to call attention to the plight of the homeless.

(30,099 posts)clear, they need money and are afraid of the beast. Americans have not realized yet, not in large
numbers at least, that we are our own dragon slayers...no one is going to end this but us.
