Former Ferguson City Court Clerk who sent racist emails speaks out

http://www.kmov.com/story/28745448/former-ferguson-court-clerk-who-sent-racist-emails-speaks-out

Former Ferguson City Court Clerk Mary Ann Twitty spoke to News 4 for the first time since being fired for sending racist emails.

Twitty was fired in early March after the Justice Department investigation into the city's law enforcement practices. Two police officers, Capt. Rick Henke and Sgt. William Mudd, also resigned after the investigation. The investigation revealed that all three former employees sent racist emails. Twitty said she found the emails to be funny, but not because of their racial nature.

“Funny as in humor wise? Yes. Not because it was racist or biased, just funny because it was just funny jokewise,” Twitty said. “I feel bad because that's not, I don't want people to look at me and say ‘she sent those racist jokes out because she's racist or biased.' I am not.”...

“It took me a while to get over the feeling of being raped and being thrown under the bus,” Twitty said. “I'm human, I meant nothing bad by it.”

For instance: “An African-American woman in New Orleans was admitted into the hospital for a pregnancy termination. Two weeks later she received a check for $5,000. She phoned the hospital to ask who it was from. The hospital said, ‘Crimestoppers.’”

she fucked herself and stepped in front of the bus.

I saw that she was going to be on the news. I didn't bother watching. What on earth could anyone say about sending those horrible things, other than an honest, unconditional apology with no excuses? I didn't care to see her, or hear her bullshit.

They also figure that there is no harm as long as no Black people see/hear the jokes. "If they don't know about it, how could their feelings get hurt?"

They fail to see this as harmful propaganda. The "crimestoppers" joke, for instance, reinforces some White people's belief that a Black culture is pro-crime. That belief then permits all kinds of harm, far more serious than hurt feelings, done to Black people.

I try to explain it to them by pointing out the harm done to the U.S. Postal Service by decades of jokes. If you give the USPS a really good look, you would find it is a pretty well oiled machine. But a lot of people today have heard the jokes so much and so long that they just accept that the USPS sucks. When government officials work to dismantle it, they just shrug since they think it is no good anyway.

Of course, if they were willing to give "a really good look", they wouldn't be telling racist jokes. So the explanation rarely does any good as they also think the USPS sucks and are unable to consider the possibility otherwise.

I see this same attitude in my Republican loving family. Yes, they are the archetypical image of rightwing racists, bigots, misogynists and homophobes, but not in their own minds. Their convoluted rational would read like a script from the set of "Mad Men", so as long as they don't actually use the "n" word, and stop just shy of punching the little-woman, torching off the non-believer's house, or shooting the queers, , and foreigners, hey, they're perfectly normal well-adjusted Americans... but I'm a socialist, so I must be confused.

bullshit!? I bet she would never be able to see any racism in herself or anyone she knows...just good white Christian folk, that have to deal with those dangerous dark people.

I swear she must be either incredibly stupid or incredibly cold hearted to say that imo.

I expect to see the Under the Bus stuff...but throwing out rape like it is a casual Sunday walk to the bus stop, is a real eye opener.
